Children in #Somaliland and #Somalia face a multitude of challenges, from climate change to hunger, child marriage, and inadequate education. These adversities have far-reaching effects on their well-being and prospects for growth. As global issues compound local problems, it is crucial to prioritize the safety, health, and resilience of these children. By focusing on quality education, mental health support (a wide neglected area), and protection from harm, it can be created a more equitable community that uplifts its most vulnerable members. #ChildrensWellbeing

Blaming social media for the youth mental health crisis misses the bigger picture. What is clear is that as a community of parents, schools and mental health support, there are things we can and should do now to support kids aged six to 12 to build critical mental fitness skills before they reach the teen years, so they can be better equipped to navigate the potential harms of social media, if and when they later arise. https://lnkd.in/gMKKU43R
While social media can negatively affect some young people's mental health it can also be protective in facilitating connectedness and a sense of community. Age-based bans may have unintended negative outcomes and a nuanced approach is needed. We are joining together with ARACY batyr Beyond Blue headspace Orygen PROJECT ROCKIT ReachOut Australia to ensure youth perspectives are included in the debate, that solutions are grounded in the evidence and that there is consideration of the areas most likely to impact the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. While social media may be a factor, other factors such as child maltreatment, the current cost of living crisis, climate change, poverty and future uncertainty are current areas of concern for young people and warrant consideration by policy makers. A nuanced approach vital here. The genuine harms caused by unregulated social media platforms are going unaddressed because the technofeudalist owners of these platforms are completely unaccountable. Political leaders risk targeting the young and unprotected consumers and shying away from measures that make these platforms safer. They are a fact of life but like the lawless Wild West of 19th Century America they need to be tamed and regulated to make them safe for everyone. The other danger of the knee jerk response and overreach of some pundits and pop psychology publications is that there is one cause of the youth mental health crisis, There are many candidate contributory causes. We do not know which are most important but they may truly have one common root and that is rampant and relentless neoliberalism - the "Invisible Doctrine' as decribed by George Monbiot and endorsed by Josef Stiglitz. See the Lancet Psychiatry Commission on Youth Mental Health which will be published on August 13th/14th. This is a major analysis of the youth mental health landscape and crisis coauthored by young people and experts from all over the world. Watch this space!

I feel really torn about this position statement. My professional brain says it’s perfect and is a very common sense approach to a complex issue. My therapist to teen/parent brain says we continue to allow a highly addictive device to run our lives, both the teen and the parents. I often want to tell parents to “smash the phone” and feel we as adults are not protecting our kids private lives enough, we are not interfering with their addiction, in fact we are starting it earlier and earlier. I think the solution is in the space where adults create a life that is connected and engaging for young people (at home/school/community). Where young people feel the disconnect of their online world because their real life offers much more. Connection to people IRL is key. I think it’s a challenge the adults need to embrace and the effects will flow on to our kids.

A fairly quick survey to have a say and inform stakeholders of the current experience as a frontline worker addressing youth homelessness and mental health Take 5-10 minutes to contribute if you can, feedback and data are so important when the powers that be are discussing and making decisions regarding current support and needs.
Calling all frontline workers! Orygen and Melbourne City Mission (MCM) want to understand what people working in the mental health and homelessness services see as the key barriers and opportunities to addressing both issues in Victoria. Your insights are crucial to ensuring young people’s needs are considered in future service design and delivery. Fill in the survey in less than 10 minutes and share it with your networks here: http://bit.ly/3vDFJsZ. Open until 24 April 2024.

Too often, we wait until we're at our breaking point to prioritize our mental health. But as Adam Grant reminds us, mental hygiene should be as ingrained in our daily routine as dental hygiene. In fact, it's never too early to prioritize self-care, and it's never too late to start. In October 2020, a crisis point led me to prioritize my mental health for the first time in my previous 38yrs on this earth. I had been burying my struggles deep and dissociating from them, grappling with destructive self-talk and often paralyzed with anxiety. Finally accepting my mental illness was a breakthrough of strength, emotional maturity, self-acceptance, and wisdom. Acceptance gave me the clarity to seek help and establish healthy boundaries and self-care tools. Let's all make a commitment to prioritize our mental health, not just when we're feeling overwhelmed, but as a regular part of our daily routine. Remember, mental health isn't something to put on the back burner. Let's take care of ourselves and each other. It’s time to normalize professional success and mental health support. IMPORTANT: If you are in crisis, please go to your local hospital, call 9-1-1 immediately or locate a Crisis Centre in your region - https://lnkd.in/gJh2ZKST. Call or text 9-8-8 anytime if you’re thinking of suicide. #BellLetsTalk #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness #softchoice Bell Let's Talk Softchoice
