Emerging economies have driven global agricultural markets for 20 years, with India and Southeast Asia now gaining influence. Middle-income countries' calorie intake will rise by 7%, while productivity improvements will reduce agriculture's GHG emissions intensity. It has been providing nourishment for generations. According to the United Nations, agricultural development is one of the most powerful tools to combat extreme poverty, boost prosperity, and feed the global population. India, a predominantly agrarian country and a few decades ago, India’s agriculture industry was the backbone of its economy, contributing a staggering 75% to the country’s GDP. Fast forward to the present day, and this number has dwindled to a mere 18.3% (2022-2023). We are unable to enable business of agriculture and make it a lucrative profession for youth. In December 2023, the Government of India notified the "Carbon Trading Mechanism in Agriculture Sector" scheme and the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has developed a framework for promoting "Voluntary Carbon Market" in India for the agricultural sector to encourage small and marginal farmers to get carbon credit benefits. Animakshi Bhushan, our Head of Operations, says that this is an interesting way to encourage people participation in increasing local carbon sinks - in the form of planting native trees (that require minimal maintenance), reducing fertiliser/pesticide dependence, tackling issues such as over-irrigation & soil erosion. These are essential for our fight against the triple planetary threats of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. But we do hope that these measures do not stay on paper and that these incentives are made as tangible as currencies. Indian agriculture needs a leapfrog approach and out-of-the-box thinking to tackle climate risks. A strong policy push, embedded with climate-tech innovations, could be the panacea for multiple climate-linked woes. We don’t have dearth of climate entrepreneurs but innovations are unlikely to scale without foundational public platforms. It’s time we build climate-stack for Indian agriculture (“Clistack”) – a digital public good – accessible to one and all. This won’t just help policymakers to design government thesis to drive India into net-zero territory but would become hotbed for climate-tech innovations. Clistack will go a long way in attracting private capital along with entrepreneurial talent – much needed for making food systems climate-resilient in India and globally. #climatetech #agritech Inc42 Media

However, solutions like upfront payments to farmers and stronger partnerships with NGOs could overcome these hurdles. 7. 🔄 Beyond Criticism to Solutions: Despite skepticism around carbon credits, we believe the real challenge lies in effective implementation, not the concept itself. 8. 🔍 A Call for Research-Based Approaches: The future demands a concerted effort in refining measurement, reporting, and verification processes, scaling proven practices alongside better implementation.
