Politician, Social Innovator, former Cabinet Minister, and founder of The Alliance for Global Good: Gender Equity & Equality. WEF Young Global Leader passionate about advancing gender rights, empowering women & youth.
Following the Union Cabinet approval of the transformative Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM JANMAN) for all round development of tribal communities, a strategic 'Manthan Shivir’ was organised this week in New Delhi to ensure better coordination and alignment of goals between Centre and State agencies. India's ST population stands at 10.45 crore as per the 2011 census, with 75 communities in 18 states and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands identified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). PM-JANMAN, bolstered by a substantial budget of ₹24,000 crore, serves as a beacon of hope for the upliftment of these vulnerable tribal communities through 11 critical interventions across 9 ministries. It ensures the provision of essential facilities, including safe housing, clean water, sanitation, education, health, road connectivity, and sustainable livelihood opportunities for our Tribal communities. The Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) plays a pivotal role in advancing the PM-JANMAN vision. Aligned with Saksham Anganwadi and POSHAN 2.0 & as per Hon PM’s direction , the ministry plans to construct 2500 Anganwadi Centres in FY 2023-24, 2024-25, and 2025-26, fully funded by MWCD at ₹12 lakh per centre. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Ministry has already implemented crucial initiatives, such as comprehensive coverage and geo-mapping of approximately 12 lakh Anganwadi Centres in collaboration with BISAG-N. A significant policy shift is evident in the convergence with MNREGS, raising the AWC building cost to Rs 12 lakh and upgrading 1.16 lakh mini Anganwadi Centres to full fledged Anganwadis , ensuring a Helper in each centre. Nutrition norms, aligned with the National Food Security Act, emphasize micronutrient-rich Supplementary Nutrition. These initiatives, already in effect, seamlessly synergize with the goals of PM JANMAN, enhancing its impact on tribal communities.

🎉 Eid-Al-Adha: Driving Rural Prosperity and Social Welfare 🎉 Eid-Al-Adha, also known as Bakrid, is more than a religious celebration; it significantly impacts socio-economic conditions, especially in rural areas. 🏡 🐐 Economic Boost from Livestock Trade: With a Muslim population of 200 Million in India, even if 10% purchase a goat for sacrifice, it results in the sale of 20 Million goats. At an average price of ₹10,000 per goat, this generates a whopping ₹200 Billion (2.35 Billion USD), that’s for a year, and it’s a recurring event. This massive economic activity primarily benefits local farmers, reinforcing a 100% desi rural economy free from foreign influence. 🇮🇳 💰 Income for Farmers: This festival is a significant source of income for farmers, who rely on livestock sales during this period. The money earned supports their livelihoods and boosts the rural economy, promoting financial stability and growth within these communities. 🌱 🍲 Food Distribution and Social Welfare: Eid-Al-Adha also has profound social impacts. During the festival, Muslims distribute food to nearly 400 Million people, ensuring that the benefits of the economic activity are shared widely. This act of charity strengthens social bonds and provides essential nutrition to millions, supporting community welfare and cohesion. ❤️ 📈 Sustainable Economic Growth: The festival's economic activities, from livestock trading to food distribution, spur local markets and create jobs. This influx of money supports small businesses and enhances overall economic stability, demonstrating how cultural traditions can drive sustainable development. 🌿 In conclusion, Eid-Al-Adha plays a pivotal role in rural economics by generating substantial income for farmers and fostering social welfare through food distribution. This festival showcases the power of traditional practices in promoting economic and social well-being. 🌟 #EidAlAdha #RuralEconomy #LivestockTrade #FarmersIncome #SocialWelfare #EconomicGrowth 🐄💸🍽️

Public Health Researcher & Practitioner, Freelancer/Consultant (Public Health), Infosys Fellow in Public Health '22.
Mahila Arogya Samiti (MAS) or Women's Health Collective is one of the key community interventions of National Urban Health Mission (NUHM). It is aimed at promoting community participation in health, and its social determinants - at all levels, including planning, implementing and monitoring of health and welfare programs. In this commentary, we share the best practices and experiences related to Mahila Aarogya Samitis from Chhattisgarh. The Chhattisgarh model shows that when a women's collective like MAS is given the autonomy and resources to act on health, food security, nutrition, sanitation, and gender based violence - they are able to use a range of strategies for their action — to act on the social determinants of health including in domains such as community-level health services, food security and nutrition, gender-based violence, safe drinking water and sanitation. They become successful in getting many public health problems resolved, e.g. in delivery of food security entitlements particularly to malnourished children, pregnant women, and safe drinking water to people. https://lnkd.in/dZb3GGgc #CommunityProcesses #UrbanHealth #SHRCChhattisgarh #NHMChhattisgarh

PARTNERS' UPDATE Small initiatives with huge impact: CRUSADE has been implementing the health programme for many years to strengthen its impact on communities. One of the impactful works under their health programme is promoting ‘Village Health Committees’ (VHCs) which focus on common health and environmental issues within the Panchayats, comprising two/three villages. In the first phase of implementation, CRUSADE has promoted about 12 VHCs spread across the four blocks of Tiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu- Sholavaram, Minjur, Gummidipoondi, and Ellapuram. Under Action Village India's ‘Partnership Solidarity Fund, CRUSADE has extended support to 12 Village Health Committees to help them plan and implement tangible actions that directly or indirectly promote public health in the villages. In response to the mounting challenges posed by sanitary waste, CRUSADE has set up a Sanitary Napkin Incinerator Machine in one of the schools in Gummidipoondi, Chennai under the supervision of the Village Health Committee for safe disposal of sanitary napkins used by the girl students. #internationaldevelopment #girlsempowerment #menstralhealth #environmentalhealth #actionvillageindia #CRUSADE #partnership #solidarity #girlshealth #India

🌱 From Migrant to Entrepreneur: Empowering Communities with Homegrown School Feeding 🌱 This morning, I came across an article in the #KathmanduPost titled "Youth Exodus to India Leaves Bajura Villages with Ageing, Ailing Residents," highlighting a pressing concern regarding youth migration from Bajura to India. The article highlights the gravity of the situation, as youth migrate alongside their children, resulting in dwindling student populations and subsequent closures of schools, the elderly, frail and fragile are left behind with little to no geriatric care. Citing a study by the Ministry of Social Development of Sudurpaschim Province conducted two years ago, the article reports that over #266000 individuals from the province migrate to India annually. This alarming trend underscores the urgent need for enhanced livelihood opportunities, as improved local prospects could potentially mitigate the need for migration among the working population. In the midst of this challenge, I was reminded of a Case Story that was shared by my team member based in Bajura santosh Sharma a few days back - A story of hope of Dhanalal Bishwakarma dai who made the courageous decision to return from India to his hometown in Swami Kartik RM-1, Muktikot of #Bajura, with a vision to establish Sharmila Agriculture and Livestock Farm. Introduced to the Home Grown School Feeding Program #HGSF), Dhanalal dai saw an opportunity to thrive locally. As a program vendor, he supplies vegetables to Shree Mandala Adharbhut School feeding 296 students daily as a part of Government of Nepal (GoN)'s initiative - School Meal Programme. Dhanalal dai's journey proves that with determination and support, local initiatives like HGSFP can create sustainable livelihoods and deter youth migration. What started off as USDA and World Food Programme's nutrition focused programme has now scaled to a system level intervention with Mercy Corps, that's creating impact ranging from improving livelihood to combating migration issues. Let's build a future where staying home means success! It’s been quite some time since we published this paper, and yes, this one is close to our hearts. Still, many Tribal Communities in Tamil Nadu live lives closely allied with nature. Their geographical remoteness plays a pivotal role in their access to resources and their development as a whole. This paper focuses mainly on the healthcare aspects of PVTGs in Tamil Nadu, delving into the cultural and structural barriers these communities face and highlighting the shift from traditional to modern medicine. Every community is unique and has different needs. Many factors come into play when it comes to their health. Proposing and implementing a uniform intervention across all areas hinders the full potential development of indigenous communities. Therefore, a tailored approach that addresses cultural sensitivities and other factors can lead to the maximum potential of these initiatives. Extending gratitude to the Nilgiris Adivasi Welfare Association for their unwavering support. Also, special thanks to my co-researchers, Ms. Harini Vasudevan and Mr. Thirumurthy N.
