On what’s expected to be a record weekend for holiday travel in the U.S., more than 10,000 hotel workers have walked off their jobs at 24 hotels from Boston and Greenwich, Conn., to Honolulu and Kauai, Hawaii, according to the Unite Here labor union. Strikes have also been authorized at hotels in Baltimore; New Haven, Conn.; Oakland, Calif.; and Providence, R.I. Workers are striking for higher wages, increased staffing, and fairer workloads, as well as the return to staffing levels and guest services that were cut during the Covid-19 pandemic, the union said. The strike is expected to last two to three days and is affecting hotel properties run by Hyatt, Hilton, and Marriott. … #HotelStrikes #LaborDay #LaborDayTravel

When the workers at one of the world’s most luxurious hotels in the world went on strike last year, their demands were based on five pillars of change: a living wage increase, healthcare, humane staffing levels, pension increases, and union growth. This led to a broad support among hotel workers and the public, and a historic contract win. What did it take to make last year’s strike a success? The hotel workers’ strike over the Labor Day weekend highlights significant issues in the hospitality industry. With around 10,000 workers participating, the strike spans major cities like Boston, Honolulu, San Francisco, Seattle, and San Diego. The workers, represented by the UNITE HERE union, are demanding higher pay, better working conditions, and a return to pre-pandemic staffing levels. This strike comes at a time when travel is at its peak, with Seattle being a top destination for the holiday weekend1. The increased travel, up 9% from last year, adds pressure on the hotels to maintain operations despite the walkouts. The workers’ demands reflect broader concerns about fair compensation and manageable workloads, especially after the pandemic led to significant cuts in services and staffing. The hotels plan to remain open with modified services, but the impact on guests and operations could be substantial. What are your thoughts on how this strike might influence the hospitality industry and labor relations moving forward?
The US hotel industry is experiencing a new labor challenge. In Boston and Greenwich, hundreds of hotel workers went on strike due to stalled contract negotiations. They demanded better wages, benefits and working conditions to reflect their key role in the recovery of the hotel industry in the post-epidemic era. This strike is not only about wages, but also about dignity and fair treatment. In today's uncertain economic environment, as the labor market changes, the hotel industry faces new pressures and challenges. The workers' voices convey an important message: the hotel industry needs to re-examine how it treats employees and ensure that their efforts are properly recognized #HotelIndustry #LaborRights #WageNegotiation #WorkingConditions #EmployeeBenefits #Boston #Greenwich #UnionPower #LaborMarket #HR #Recruitment #EmployeeParticipation #ServiceIndustry #Post-Economy

They’re the street vendors serving up our morning chai, the delivery people racing through traffic to deliver our meals on time, office helper and domestic helpers keeping our office and house sparkling. Informal workers are the unseen force that keeps our daily lives running smoothly. But behind their tireless efforts lies a harsh reality. Long hours, low wages, and a lack of basic protections often define their working conditions. Their struggles and voices deserve to be heard. Through their campaign, “A Worker’s Agenda for Just Futures” ActionAid Association is on a mission to popularize the pathway to justice envisaged by workers. Acknowledging the challenges faced by both sides in the ongoing hotel strikes. There may need to be more than the $35 hourly wage for housekeepers or dishwashers in certain regions to cover the high living costs in the area. These are demanding jobs essential for ensuring guests' needs are met promptly. On the other hand, hotels also face increased expenses in healthcare, operations, and taxes, while customers seek better deals and discounts. Finding a solution to address these issues is crucial to ensure fair wages for workers while balancing the operational costs of hotels. It's a complex situation that requires thoughtful consideration and collaboration from all parties involved. Working towards a sustainable resolution that meets the needs of both employees and employers is essential for the long-term success and stability of the hospitality industry. #HotelIndustry #LaborDisputes #FairWages #HospitalitySector #Collaboration #EmployeeWellbeing https://lnkd.in/g7i7B_C4
