Community as a meaningful term had always an important role in each of us lives, but in the past few years you could have the feeling that the content and the word started to live separate life. In the world, which some times seems so divided, we need to strenghten our internal definition, what community really means for us. Does it mean only our micro ecosystem of friends and / or family. Does it mean people with similar interest? Or maybe a nation? In my opinion, belonging to the mentioned ones is so essential, that it also means the easy way (eventhough the last one could be challenging sometimes), and lead no real improvement on a personal or group level. Empathy, solidarity, communication and open mind towards totally different opinions, contributed to humanity’s greatest achievement, and can be the fundamentals when we think about what are the different layers of community we take part in. Europe globally, and within Europe, Central and Eastern Europe can be only powerful, if we turn back to our core human values, which exist independently which nation we are belonging to, what size our country is, and what historical backpack we have. Especially in our region, the common language of innovation and specific intention behind health tech innovation to improve people’s life can eliminate barriers, and build real communities accross borders, age groups and other attributes. I am proud that one of my communities, EIT Health is part of a larger community EIT, which actively support Ukraine, the member of one of my largest community, Europe. Today we have a large event, where in representation of EIT Health, I had the pleasure to share opportunities with Ukranian innovators (as well as try my very little, but gradually improving Ukranian language skills 😊). Did you know that over a billion people worldwide lack access to basic vision care? In developing countries, this challenge is particularly acute, with over 800 million people with presbyopia that simply need reading glasses to improve their quality of life. To tackle this critical need, innovative collaborations are emerging to provide new solutions. We've partnered with Healthy Entrepreneurs and RestoringVision, supported by the Million Lives Collective and Bayer Foundation, to measure the impact of a program aimed at addressing vision impairments in underserved communities in Uganda. We spoke with Mark Lorey from RestoringVision, Juliette Van Halst from Healthy Entrepreneurs and Olivia Elson from Results for Development to get a first-hand perspective on the 60dB impact data gathered from the pilot. The new EDMO report on the implementation of #CoP commitments on #MediaLiteracy, #Research and #FactChecking by very large online platforms #VLOPs and search engines #VLOSEs shows: 1️⃣ Despite recent launches of new tools for #researchers, access to #data remains an unfulfilled condition and quick progress needs to be made by all platform signatories of the Code to ensure transparency and accountability of their risk mitigation measures. 2️⃣ Structural support and funding of fact-checking, research and #MIL expert communities remain inadequate. 3️⃣ Progress towards the integration of independent experts’ feedback into platforms’ user-facing tools is still patchy and insufficient. 🔍 Leveraging its field-specific expertise, the EDMO Network has surveyed these three key areas of the #CodeofPractice on #Disinformation with a view to assessing the quality and effectiveness of the actions reported by the platforms in their September 2023 transparency reports.
