From 29-31 May, our team joined the 2024 HIMSS Europe Conference (#HIMSS24Europe) held in Rome, Italy. This conference brought together health professionals, scientists, experts and policymakers, among others, on a thought-provoking discussion on tomorrow’s healthcare. 💡🔬   💬 In a panel discussion on the next steps of the European Health Data Space (#EHDS) legislation, Gozde Susuzlu Briggs (EPF’s Senior Programme Manager) highlighted the benefits of EHDS for patients, healthcare professionals and public health, and stressed the need to ensure inclusive implementation.     💬 Valentina Strammiello (EPF’s Director of Strategic Initiatives) joined a discussion on the role of digital portals for patients. Health Technology Assessment is a valuable tool for chronic patients, including those with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), as it ensures that decisions about healthcare interventions are based on thorough evaluations of their effectiveness, safety, and cost-effectiveness. For IBD patients, HTA provides a structured way to assess not only the clinical benefits of new treatments but also their impact on patients' quality of life, considering factors such as long-term side effects, ease of use, and the potential for personalized medicine. By involving patients directly in the HTA process, their lived experiences and priorities become central to the decision-making process, making healthcare more patient-centered. This is particularly important for chronic diseases like IBD, where treatments need to be effective over the long term and should align with individual patients’ needs. HTA empowers patients by allowing them to influence the development and approval of therapies that are relevant to their daily lives, ultimately leading to better health outcomes and a more efficient use of healthcare resources. In a broader sense, HTA for chronic conditions emphasizes the importance of sustainable healthcare solutions, balancing innovation with accessibility, and ensuring that the best possible care reaches those who need it the most. I have the privilege to support ScanBalt and the Chair of its digital working group Oliver Stenzel with drafting a declaration on digital transformation and innovation addressing European and national policy makers.
