Four Pan London Cancer Research Fellowships have been awarded by participating NHS Cancer Alliances in London. Research areas cover improving the linkage between imaging and pathology diagnosis, using algorithms to predict non-small-cell lung cancer reoccurrence, health inequalities in local head and neck cancer services, and supporting young patients living with cancer. The Fellowship Programme’s focus is aligned with the ambitions of the NHS Long Term Plan, with projects aimed at improving early diagnosis, addressing cancer inequalities and providing appropriate personalised care for people living with and beyond cancer. Game-changing news in rare cancer research! 🔬 Researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer have achieved a groundbreaking milestone in understanding rare cancers. They've developed "mini-tumours," a revolutionary tool that mirrors the complexity of rare cancers in a controlled environment. This innovation offers a new window into cancer progression and opens up possibilities for designing more effective clinical interventions. Why is this important? These mini-tumours preserve the unique characteristics of the original tumors, allowing researchers to study them in unprecedented detail. This means a better understanding of how rare cancers evolve and respond to treatments, bringing us closer to personalized medicine for those facing these challenging diagnoses. Your ongoing support and interest are what drive these scientific breakthroughs! Together, let's continue to make strides in rare cancer research and care. 🌟 Read more about this incredible advancement here: https://lnkd.in/gd63a_Wb #RareCancerResearch #Innovation #MiniTumours #JediRareCancerFoundation #RaiseAwareness #MakingADifference #DonateToday #FightAgainstRareCancers #RareCancerIsntRare

Good to see Genomics England's latest research on cancer genomics published today in Nature Medicine - the largest of its kind study into the whole genomes of 13,000 cancer patients in England - showing the true potential of precision oncology to better tailor care. However, set against this, we also saw new analysis showing the UK has some of the worst cancer outcomes in the developed world. We need to plug the gap between pioneering R&I and translation, to improve outcomes and bring us in line with international colleagues. I'm looking forward to seeing what the next year brings the cancer community in terms of urgently needed government policy and manifesto commitments - a cancer strategy perhaps? Great to have Dr. Allie Grossmann as a member of the team and in the lab adjoining mine at the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute & Providence Cancer Institute. From our early discussions I believe there are many opportunities for us to collaborate. On this #WorldCancerResearchDay It is more clear than ever that we all need to work togetther to #FinishCancer. This includes #academics, #biotechs, #pharma, #regulators, & #investors from #VCs & #FamilyOffices. #cancer #immunotherapy
It’s World Cancer Research Day and we are thrilled to highlight the newest member of our #FINISHCANCER research team, Allie Grossmann M.D., Ph.D.! With an impressive background and a wealth of experience, Dr. Grossmann joins us as an associate member of the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute, the research arm of Providence Cancer Institute. Dr. Grossmann’s Cancer Signaling and Immunosuppressive Trafficking Laboratory will study tumor immunology from the tumor perspective, which can influence the effectiveness of cancer treatments and offer a fresh angle on cancer biology. We sat down to chat with Dr. Grossmann about her new lab, what inspired her to pursue a career in cancer research, and how she enjoys her downtime exploring the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Laura Hopkins (Saskatchewan Cancer Agency & University of Saskatchewan) is a gynecologic oncologist and cancer researcher, who leads a clinical trial measuring how patients with #ovariancancer use information from molecular tumour testing to guide treatment decisions based on quality of life and outcome considerations. This study, which is contributing cases to the MOHCCN Gold Cohort, will provide an important step towards measuring the real-world impact of precision oncology on the lives of cancer patients. For our latest #ResearcherProfile, we spoke to Dr. Hopkins to learn more about her research and clinical work, how precision oncology can help empower patients to make decisions about their own care based on their values and preferences and how the Network is bringing together clinicians, patients and basic scientists to improve connectivity between cancer research and care. We really think this one is a must-read to better understand the multiple layers of #precisionmedicine. A research team led by Dr Lisa Mielke at La Trobe's School of Cancer Medicine, the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute, have made a discovery that holds great potential for treating one of the world's most prominent forms of cancer. The team found that patients whose bowel cancer tumours showed evidence of a particular type of immune cell (known as a 'gamma delta t-cell') had much better health outcomes. This led researchers to take a closer look at gamma delta t-cells to better understand how to harness and enhance their cancer-killing potential. The research - shortlisted for a prestigious Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Scientific Resarch - may pave the way for new immunotherapies that improve health outcomes and save the lives of countless cancer patients.
