The Interstate Bridge Replacement program recognizes that a skilled and diverse workforce is critical to the program's success. To identify strategies to improve workforce readiness and empower participation by business owners and workers of historically disadvantaged communities, we recently commissioned a workforce study. The study — a collaborative effort by Clackamas Workforce Partnership, Worksystems and Workforce Southwest Washington — is a key step in understanding the gaps in the region's current workforce and provides recommendations for how to bridge them. 📣 CareerSource Brevard (CSB) and CareerSource Flagler Volusia (CSFV) have consolidated their workforce boards. The new board, CareerSource Brevard Flagler Volusia (CSBFV) offers career centers in the tri-county area located in: - Palm Coast - Daytona Beach - Orange City - Titusville - Rockledge - Patrick Air Force Base - Palm Bay The new workforce board will build a better future for the community through a continued commitment to excellence, efficiency and community growth. The merger is part of a multi-year comprehensive plan to offer a wider scope of employment services and training programs and boost collaboration among economic, education, business and government agencies. The workforce board's sector-strategy approach aims to solve regional workforce challenges — directing initiatives that target in-demand industries including Aerospace/Aviation, Advanced Manufacturing, Construction and IT/Cybersecurity to drive regional growth. I agree with my Maryland Workforce Association Board President, Kirkland Murray, that House Bill 1128 has the potential to be good legislation and a great fund to support Maryland's economy. The bill needed to be amended to include Maryland's 13 Local Workforce Development Boards as an eligible applicant for the funds though. If the bill crosses over to the Maryland Senate, I could see several more amendments to truly make the bill and fund achieve its intent. Sadly though, the bill should have included Maryland's 13 Local Workforce Development Boards as an applicant in its initial drafting. Additionally, all workforce development programs funded by the Maryland Department of Labor should be required to be aligned with the in-demand industries identified in the grant applicants' local area's local plan (approved by the Maryland Department of Labor and the Governor's Workforce Development Board of Maryland). We have a lot of work to do to ensure in our "partnership" to ensure Maryland's 13 Local Workforce Development Boards aren't an afterthought or an amendment. I really enjoyed hearing the US Department of Labor speak to the Illinois Workforce Partnership yesterday about the four pillars of workforce development they have identified for their 2030 vision: 1. Expanding Opportunities for Underserved Workers and Communities 2. New Industry Partnerships that Lead to Real, Good Jobs 3. Build a Better Care Economy 4. Action Today for the Future of Work It will take all of us to meet the needs of our economy. Our work as professionals is to continue to highlight and uplift existing programs, build partnerships and break down silos, catalyze success by scaling up together, and create strategic plans to meet the needs of the future.
