Scania Group has successfully integrated remanufactured gearboxes into its production line in Sweden, marking a major step towards more sustainable propulsion systems.
As part of the iReGear research project, Scania built gearboxes using 50% fewer new components, reducing carbon emissions by up to 45% compared to producing entirely new units.
“This remanufactured gearbox is a compelling example of how heavy vehicle production can become more circular, efficient, and environmentally friendly without compromising on quality,” said Fredrik Nilzén, head of sustainability at Scania.
“It’s a significant achievement for everyone involved.”
Reusing components
The remanufacturing process involves replacing worn-out parts while reusing functional components, with replacement rates ranging from 10% to 100%, depending on the condition of the donor gearbox.
All remanufactured gearboxes undergo the same rigorous testing as new ones, ensuring they meet performance requirements.
Research suggests this approach could help the automotive industry transition to circular manufacturing systems, which consume fewer resources and produce fewer emissions.
The project was co-ordinated by KTH Royal Institute of Technology and also involved Scania and Scandinavian Transmission Service AB.
“This research provides the first evidence to support the argument that it is feasible to envision future manufacturing organisations seamlessly integrating manufacturing and remanufacturing operations,” said Farazee Asif, assistant professor at KTH.
”This will develop circular manufacturing systems that consume fewer resources, produce fewer emissions and cost less without compromising on quality and performance.”
While remanufacturing remains mostly confined to the aftermarket in Europe, Scania’s efforts through iReGear aim to inspire broader adoption within the industry, ultimately helping OEMs achieve climate targets and move towards a more sustainable future for vehicle and vessel propulsion.
