FAIR TRADE Latest EcoMeme goes live Friday 24th May. Westie ain't cheap! Protecting and restoring nature is expensive and requires long term investment and commitment in order to achieve successful results. In order to deliver the best results for nature a biodiversity credit market needs to factor in high prices for high integrity credits that deliver positive outcomes for nature with high degrees of certainty. None of this is cheap. Payment for successful biodiversity protection and restoration includes consideration for pre-action planning, field implementation, and post-action monitoring and evaluation. In addition, when a positive biodiversity outcome is encapsulated as a credit and delivered to market there are additional expenses for the verification and governance requirements associated with this. The good news is that labour is a large component of the required cost base (https://lnkd.in/gGvueSmQ) so if done correctly there are opportunities for biodiversity credit markets to deliver positive outcomes for nature through meaningful pay for meaningful work undertaken by Traditional Owners and people in local communities. Our aim is to build the world's best biodiversity credit market, one that recognises the true value of nature, results in an equitable distribution of benefits and empowers local communities along the way! Tetra Pak commits to taking action for nature News from Lausanne, Switzerland: Ahead of the United Nations’ International Day of Biodiversity on 22nd May, Tetra Pak has launched its ‘Approach to Nature’—a comprehensive framework dedicated to halting and reversing nature loss and enhancing water security. This initiative aligns with global targets, including those outlined in the Biodiversity Plan, which aims to halt biodiversity loss and set nature on a recovery path for the benefit of all life on Earth. Gilles Tisserand, Vice President Climate & Biodiversity at Tetra Pak, stated: “With over half of the world’s GDP heavily reliant on nature, the stakes could not be higher. Our ‘Approach to Nature’ not only reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship but also builds on our longstanding action in this domain, cemented by our inclusion in the 2023 CDP Forests A List for the eighth consecutive year and the achievement of an A- in Water Security for our first year of reporting. As other companies join us on this journey, together we can help protect and restore nature for the generations to come.” Eva Zabey, CEO of Business for Nature, remarked: “Tetra Pak's 'Approach to Nature' marks an important milestone, emphasizing how the corporate world must step up to support the ambitious targets of the Biodiversity Plan. We encourage all companies to set a nature strategy—a clear plan for how they will contribute towards a nature-positive future by 2030. However, businesses can't achieve this alone; governments must create the right incentives to speed up corporate action to address #nature loss." Tetra Pak has set 25 ambitious targets, including ensuring that by 2025, 100% of its raw materials with the most significant land footprint will originate from certified or controlled sources, and by 2030, achieving a 50% reduction of water use in best practice processing lines compared to 2019. Online Wereld Natuur Fonds (WWF-NL) European Business & Biodiversity Forum 2024. The Science-based Initiative includes targets on terrestrial ecosystems: (1) no conversion of ecosystems- especially in high conservation value areas (2) land footprint reduction -for example promote regenerative agriculture, strive for a better balance between animal-plant protein in human diets, as well as reduce food waste. (3) engagement with landscapes. - multistakeholder cooperation to strive for multiple, connected goals. All of this -but certainly the latter one -is key, crucial, in making new regulations (such as EUDR/ EUCSDDD/CSRD) actually work for nature conservation. Much of this will come back in our IUCN NL event on October 1rst, with @PartnersforWater/ Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) | Partner in Sustainable Development-on translating the Global Biodiversity Framework into action and transformation. Do subscribe (just some places left), be inspired and informed in various of the many sessions: https://lnkd.in/eTGAAe2P

Last week, Wolfram Chemie had the privilege of attending the CSRD Reporting and Biodiversity Final Event hosted by the Michael Otto Environmental Foundation. The event brought together multiple stakeholders to discuss how businesses can adopt more sustainable practices while aligning with CSRD requirements and enhancing biodiversity protection. The event opened with keynote speeches from Alexander Bonde and Dr. Johannes Merck, emphasizing the urgent need for companies to consider biodiversity in their strategies. One of the key moments was the presentation of a practical guide developed by experts, which offers a framework for conducting materiality analyses that are not only CSRD-compliant but also ambitious in terms of conservation. A recurring theme throughout the discussions was the connection between corporate sustainability and the protection of natural resources. Panelists like Lutz Diederichs and Dr. Katharina Reuter highlighted how companies can leverage biodiversity-friendly policies to enhance both their environmental impact and financial performance. The event provided valuable insights into how businesses can lead the way in addressing biodiversity loss while navigating complex sustainability regulations. As we move forward, it's clear that integrating biodiversity into corporate reporting isn't just a legal obligation—it’s an opportunity for growth and innovation. Wolfram Chemie is excited to take these lessons back to our team as we continue to refine our sustainability strategies and contribute to a more balanced relationship between business and the environment. #WolframChemie #CSRD #Biodiversity #Event
