Just attended an insightful panel discussion at the European Business & Biodiversity Forum with Bernhard Frey from EFRAG, Sebastien Godinot WWF, and Pierre-Yves Burlot at SÉCHÉ Group on how CSRD is setting the tone for corporate action on nature. A key takeaway is the emphasis on double materiality under CSRD, requiring companies not only to report on financial risks but also on their impacts on nature and people—a critical shift towards real accountability. 💡 🌱 Sebastien from WWF stressed the importance of transition plans alongside targets. 🌱 Bernhard Frey highlighted how standardised reporting helps businesses not just comply but also drive positive change. 🌱 Pierre-Yves from SECHE Group showed how mid-sized companies can leverage CSRD as an opportunity to transform their business models, with biodiversity at the heart of their operations. At South Pole and CO2logic, a South Pole company, we help companies navigate this landscape. Our CSRD advisory services offer tools and methodologies to ensure businesses stays compliant, while our Biodiversity Advisory Services provide actionable strategies to manage biodiversity impacts and dependencies. 🌱 Want to be ready for the next wave of corporate sustainability? Biodiversity loss will be the next big thing in sustainable business and for many companies it is already today. According to the WWF Living Planet Report, wildlife populations have declined at an average of ~70% in the last half-century, signaling an urgent need for action to prevent ecological collapse and climate disaster. The loss of biodiversity is not just an environmental issue, but a business risk that threatens the very foundations of our global economy. >> Understand the Impact: The first step is understanding our corporate footprint. Companies should conduct thorough audits to understand their impact on biodiversity. This includes direct actions, such as land use and waste production, as well as indirect impacts through their supply chains. >> Set Clear Goals: Once we understand our impact, we need to set clear, measurable goals for biodiversity conservation. These goals should be integrated into the broader sustainability strategy and should align with global standards such as the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. >> Invest in Nature: Companies can invest in nature-based solutions. This could include initiatives like reforestation, supporting local conservation projects, or investing in sustainable agriculture practices. >> Collaborate and Advocate: No company can tackle biodiversity loss alone. We need to collaborate with other businesses, governments, NGOs, and communities. We also need to use our influence to advocate for policies that protect biodiversity. >> Educate and Engage: Finally, we need to educate our employees, customers, and stakeholders about the importance of biodiversity. We can engage them in our conservation efforts and inspire them to take action in their own lives. Roland Berger recently published an interesting white-paper about translating the value of biodiversity into economic terms. The approach aims to prevent ecological collapse and combat climate change by integrating biodiversity considerations into financial strategies and policy-making: https://lnkd.in/dE7ABXj3 "The true role of biodiversity will mostly be felt when it’s too late. The value of biodiversity for our nations and companies is far too important to ignore." – Hani Tohme, Senior Partner, Roland Berger Is biodiversity on your company’s sustainability agenda today? #Biodiversity #SustainableBusiness #BiodiversityLoss #UNSustainableDevelopmentGoals #SDG

Tetra Pak commits to taking action for nature News from Lausanne, Switzerland: Ahead of the United Nations’ International Day of Biodiversity on 22nd May, Tetra Pak has launched its ‘Approach to Nature’—a comprehensive framework dedicated to halting and reversing nature loss and enhancing water security. This initiative aligns with global targets, including those outlined in the Biodiversity Plan, which aims to halt biodiversity loss and set nature on a recovery path for the benefit of all life on Earth. Gilles Tisserand, Vice President Climate & Biodiversity at Tetra Pak, stated: “With over half of the world’s GDP heavily reliant on nature, the stakes could not be higher. Our ‘Approach to Nature’ not only reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship but also builds on our longstanding action in this domain, cemented by our inclusion in the 2023 CDP Forests A List for the eighth consecutive year and the achievement of an A- in Water Security for our first year of reporting. As other companies join us on this journey, together we can help protect and restore nature for the generations to come.” Eva Zabey, CEO of Business for Nature, remarked: “Tetra Pak's 'Approach to Nature' marks an important milestone, emphasizing how the corporate world must step up to support the ambitious targets of the Biodiversity Plan. We encourage all companies to set a nature strategy—a clear plan for how they will contribute towards a nature-positive future by 2030. However, businesses can't achieve this alone; governments must create the right incentives to speed up corporate action to address #nature loss." Tetra Pak has set 25 ambitious targets, including ensuring that by 2025, 100% of its raw materials with the most significant land footprint will originate from certified or controlled sources, and by 2030, achieving a 50% reduction of water use in best practice processing lines compared to 2019. Kuyua, CSRD and ecosystem services. How do these elements combine into a formula of sustainable development? The EU CSRD (and ESRS, respectively) norms pivot around the notion of ecosystem services under the umbrella term of biodiversity. What are these services and why are they so important for sustainability [and] reporting? Ecosystem services are ecological processes and functions (e.g. pollination, carbon sequestration, clean water, soil health, etc.) that have value to human society. Ecosystems and ecosystem services are individual yet interrelated components that, along with many other metrics, comprise a holistic view of biodiversity. Respectively, holistic assessments account for the possibility to generate an equally holistic overview of a company’s impacts as well as its dependencies on nature and its ecosystem services. Biodiversity is an indicator of the respective ecosystem’s health, and healthy ecosystems mean abundant ecosystem services convertible into economic value and benefits for society. Respectively, threatened or stressed ecosystems pose risks to companies that both affect them and depend on them in terms of resources (regulating, provisioning, supporting, and/or cultural). In this double materiality loop, ecosystems and their services lie at the core of the cycle, where they may be viewed as either risks or opportunities for businesses, or both at the same time. At kuyua, we build our analysis around the concept of biodiversity and help compliance-driven and action-driven companies determine the impact drivers that put pressure on their immediate environment, as well as the associated risks the degraded/affected ecosystems pose. Furthermore, we offer actionable plans aiming at minimizing negative effects for ecosystems and maximizing benefits from nature services. Today, May 22nd, we celebrate International Biodiversity Day and emphasise the critical importance of our relationship with the natural world. 💚 Despite all our technological advances, we remain completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for our water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter and energy. Respecting, protecting, and repairing our biological wealth is imperative. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted in December 2022, aims to stop and reverse nature loss by 2050. This year's theme, “Be part of the Plan,” calls on everyone to support this mission. We're proud to highlight GPA Flowsystem AB’s efforts in sustainability - They have planted trees, bushes, and flowers to support bees, bumblebees, and butterflies. Together, let's keep our planet healthy and vibrant for all living creatures. 🌿🐝 #partoftheplan #sustainability #biodiversity #processenergywater #waterchemicalsystems #gpaflowsystem

Last week, Wolfram Chemie had the privilege of attending the CSRD Reporting and Biodiversity Final Event hosted by the Michael Otto Environmental Foundation. The event brought together multiple stakeholders to discuss how businesses can adopt more sustainable practices while aligning with CSRD requirements and enhancing biodiversity protection. The event opened with keynote speeches from Alexander Bonde and Dr. Johannes Merck, emphasizing the urgent need for companies to consider biodiversity in their strategies. One of the key moments was the presentation of a practical guide developed by experts, which offers a framework for conducting materiality analyses that are not only CSRD-compliant but also ambitious in terms of conservation. A recurring theme throughout the discussions was the connection between corporate sustainability and the protection of natural resources. Panelists like Lutz Diederichs and Dr. Katharina Reuter highlighted how companies can leverage biodiversity-friendly policies to enhance both their environmental impact and financial performance. The event provided valuable insights into how businesses can lead the way in addressing biodiversity loss while navigating complex sustainability regulations. As we move forward, it's clear that integrating biodiversity into corporate reporting isn't just a legal obligation—it’s an opportunity for growth and innovation. Wolfram Chemie is excited to take these lessons back to our team as we continue to refine our sustainability strategies and contribute to a more balanced relationship between business and the environment. #WolframChemie #CSRD #Biodiversity #Event

GRI Updates their Biodiversity Standard 🦎 We joined today's launch webinar on the newly released Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standard for disclosing biodiversity impact (GRI 101), aligning seamlessly with Global Biodiversity Framework, Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), and Science Based Targets Network. There will be a recording you can check for more details, but here are some of our key takeaways: 🌍 Nature Positivity by 2030: Setting a bold target to have more nature in 2030 than in 2020. A crucial initiative with a clear baseline for progress. 🌱 Shifting from 'Doing Something' to 'Doing What's Necessary': Inspired by Marco Lambertini perspective, it's time to move beyond mere actions and focus on what's truly needed to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. 🔄 Ecosystem Services in Decline: Despite their decline, we heavily rely on ecosystem services. Acknowledging this interdependence is vital for sustainable practices. 💼 Financial Institutions and Investors' Awakening: Snorre Gjerde highlights the growing awareness among financial institutions and investors regarding the impact of business activities on biodiversity. 📊 Measurement Challenges: As Emily McKenzie from TNFD rightly emphasized, measurement and metrics pose significant challenges. That's why we at Hula Earth contribute by providing a 360-degree view of biodiversity using technology. 🤝 Join the Solution: In the words of Raphaëlle Archambeaud, "You can either be part of the problem or part of the solution." We're dedicated to being part of the solution, and we invite you to reach out if you're ready to measure your own company's biodiversity impact or to support biodiversity-positive projects 💚 #biodiversity #csrd #naturepositivity #sustainability #leadership #impact #gri #tnfd
