The impact of Hurricane Beryl on southeast Texas has been devastating. Over 213,000 electric cooperative consumer-members lost power, highlighting the critical importance of resilient infrastructure. The flooding and powerful winds have caused significant damage, and our thoughts are with all those affected. How are recovery efforts progressing, and what measures are being taken to restore electricity and support the communities impacted by this severe weather event?

Across Texas at one point 2.7mn people were without power with 1.7mn still lacking power as of Wednesday morning. It is clear that #climatechange, in this case creating exceptionally high ocean temperatures, accentuated the storm. With some 80% of major outages caused by extreme weather it is also clear that the scale and incidence of these storms is the major electric reliability challenge US consumers face and that things will only get worse. Accelerating decarbonization of the electric grid is a key tool in fighting climate change and hence protecting grid reliability. NRECA should be doing more to both recognize and explain this reality and of course promote the changes needed.

Another example if dedicated people coming together to literally turn the lights back on. Something we should never take for granted.
