I was listening to a few of the leading lights of the Gold Coast business community recently and they highly praised the direction of the city and the strength of the economy. Their speaking points must have been sent via e-mail. I'm unsure if these gents ever leave the Gold Coast and venture to Brisbane or interstate to fully understand the competitive nature of Australia's economy and the visible growth outside the Gold Coast. Earlier this month the Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA) launched their State of the City Report. (see link below) BEDA is a very formidable economic competitor and advocacy body. Brisbane's economy will be worth $275B by 2041, an increase of 68% and for comparison the Gold Coast's economy is worth $40.98B* or if we apply the 68% Brisbane increase, $68B in 2041. (Source: *Gold Coast Economic Outlook August 2023) Brisbane's economy is worth more than four times the Gold Coast, think about this for a moment and the future opportunities for the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast suffers from pretender syndrome, as the city pretends to be something it's not while failing to grasp the opportunities that are presented and continues to be ignored as a serious region in South East Queensland let alone in Sydney, Melbourne and our nations capital Canberra. Is it any wonder why the M1 from the Gold Coast to Brisbane is more like a car park every day as people flee the city for work and business opportunities rather than work locally. The train to and from Brisbane is also very busy every day. We have been doing the same things on the Gold Coast for the last 12 years and until such time as we do things differently, grow up and have a mature dialogue with others outside the city our economy will stagger forward with the hand brake half on and I doubt we will realize the city's full potential. #economy #goldcoast #brisbane #economicactivation #advocacy https://lnkd.in/gYSDJpAb projecting

The second question every Canadian asks me is why on earth would I leave New Zealand for Toronto? My answer is always, โwhy not?โ Not every observation in this article is true to my experience, but it made me reflect on the professional growth forced by working outside your home market. What works everywhere, what doesnโt, whatโs done just because it always has been. Whatโs universally human and whatโs cultural. What our own biases are. The flip side of this is the power granted by an outside perspective, that allows to us question and push. As a strategist it can feel frustrating and limiting to not immediately understand all the nuances of the culture youโre advertising in. But those limits force the rigour, study and observation that any planner should relish. More than anything, it forces us to keep asking why, why, why. My love for Canada and Canadians grows every day because of the work I get to do. And if you were wondering, the first question Canadians ask me is if Iโm from Australia.
