Internship opportunities are essential for career development!

It truly was a crazy 4 months, trying to balance field research, lab work, data analysis, hosting international collaborators, co-organizing a career fair, working on developing the national biodiversity targets and indicators in alignment with the global biodiversity framework and much more! Nevertheless - always a pleasure providing young ppl with opportunities that enables them to experience research! Some of the most interesting / surprising things some of my interns have said to be me which makes me question whether we communicate what it is like being a research enough! - “The research lab work was so repetitive, I expected to do something new/ different everyday.” - Context: I offered my interns co-authorship as they did a lot of lab work, I asked them that if they wanted they could contribute to data analysis and writing so they can gain some experience. Some interns asked me if they were going to get paid to do so 😅😅 I had to explain to them that researchers don’t get paid to write papers when they collaborate with others. - Interns were surprised to hear that researchers pay journals to publish their work especially for it to be open access! It is rewarding to see them all grow but it always makes me realize how much work we need to do to communicate things in a better manner and lead by example! I truly had the best group so far! Feeling so blessed! P.S. The video only showcases 3 out of the 7 smart interns and budding scientists I took on!

🌟 Thrilled to share my experience as a DOE Scholar supporting the Justice40 initiative! 🌟 As a rising junior double majoring in economics and mathematics at the University of Maryland, College Park, this summer has been incredibly rewarding. I have been working on creating a relational database of Justice40 data by integrating multiple datasets into an database, focused on ensuring that 40% of climate investment benefits reach disadvantaged communities. In addition to this, I've reached out to utility companies and public service commissions across the nation to gather data on utility shutoffs and arrearage information. This effort aligns with the EIA-EJE partnership to explore utility shutoff payback clauses. With many states having halted shutoffs during COVID-19, customers are now facing large bills. Our goal is to find data that shows the impact of these moratoria on disadvantaged communities. We’re exploring state energy offices, federal agencies, and university studies to understand this issue better. I’ve also been utilizing Microsoft Office to design and analyze documentation, presentations, and visualizations to support our reports. This internship has provided me with valuable skills in data analysis, statistical reasoning, database management, and technical communication. Weekly progress reports, mentor collaboration, and group meetings have been vital in developing my expertise in these areas. In addition, I've had the pleasure of meeting wonderful professionals and scholars who have offered invaluable advice on graduate school, career paths, and beyond. Their guidance has been instrumental in shaping my academic and professional goals. A huge thank you to my mentors Alvin Bates, PMP, Dr. Anjuli Jain Figueroa, and the fantastic team at EJE for their support and guidance. After concluding my internship with the Indiana FFA Organization, I was approached by my academic advisor, Chrissie Strong, about the opportunity to be featured as a Purdue University Agricultural Economics Success Story!
