1 Step Forward, 2 steps Black - I wrote a piece addressing the Women in PR shadow board. I did not expect my first piece as Chair of Black Women In Comms, UK Black Comms Network to be a piece highlighting yet another diversity issue within the PR industry but alas here we are.  I have always been a proud advocate of Black women in PR and comms; knowing so many talented women who have made strides whether in house, agency or as independent business owners. There are so many bold and vibrant minds who are shaping conversations and making waves and yet it continues to be an uphill struggle for the industry to recognise and celebrate them. "I hope those who need to make a change think about the impact of their lack of wilful intent and commitment to change leads to an erasure of Black women on paper but not in spirit. How to create a great campaign cheatsheet: ✔️ Find a problem ✔️ Create smart wordplay - to stop the reader/viewer and to make it easily memorable ✔️ Create catchy visuals - to highlight the issues, but don't steal the spotlight ✔️ Come with numbers/facts about the problem - to build credibility and a sense of urgency ✔️ Find a solution ✔️ Show how you are part of the solution And taraaa! Simple? Nop! This is why: ❗You need to know your target audience. ❗You need to know, have and nurture a community. ❗You need to know your brand/company values, mission and vision. ❗ You need to know that it is not about you. I asked Chloe Davies if she minds me sharing this deeply personal and vulnerable moment from today's launch of It Takes A Village Collective.  She bravely agreed. I share it with so much respect, and love, as it speaks to the very heart of this endeavour.  A moment when her very real pain as a black woman navigating the less than inclusive marketing industry, came through.  When the light was shone on her gut felt passion for driving more representation for black women in the industry.  And this collective, this movement - is now shining a light on the broader group who are determined to lift each other up. This global insight study 'We Can't All Be Lying' announced today, will not only be the first exploration of the experience for black women in the industry, but will also be a first of its kind study to take a comprehensive look through the lens of gender and ethnicity pay gaps with the data tracking and support of The Diversity Standards Collective (live 8th April).  The output will provide clear frameworks for those who are not sure what to do about it, and a strong global community for black women in the industry to share, learn and build together.  How can we be in this far reaching, very powerful industry, when we are not representing the black women in our own houses? 🙄 Oh, Let's Talk "Diversity": Black Women in Business Edition 🙄 So, your idea of diversity is all about women in business, right? Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but my diversity goes a bit deeper than that. It's not just about being a woman—it's about being a Black woman in business, constantly fighting to rise in spaces where we're often overlooked and underestimated. Breaking Down Walls: Let's be real, the barriers Black women entrepreneurs face are no joke. From dealing with systemic biases to scraping together resources, it's a constant uphill battle. But hey, we're used to it by now, right? From Tolerance to Celebration: Oh, how generous of you to "tolerate" us in these spaces. But newsflash: we're not here to be tolerated. We're here to be celebrated! Our contributions deserve more than just a pat on the back—they deserve a parade. Time to Amplify: It's about time we start amplifying the voices of Black women in business. Our stories, our successes, our struggles—they all deserve to be heard loud and clear. An excellent article from Michael Franklin with some great reminders for communications and PR professionals working with Black women leaders to navigate and address the unique challenges and biases Black women experience with increased visibility in media and public scrutiny. "Communications professionals are often brought in because of their ability to assist a leader with telling their story. To effectively do this work, they must comprehend and understand the various systems and systemic prejudices like misogynoir that impact clients.
