The Merian Fund call 'Blue economy: economic activities and healthy ecosystems in oceans' is open for submissions. Oceans not only provide habitat for biodiversity, but are also essential for energy, fisheries, aquaculture, transport, tourism and more. These diverse functions can conflict within marine and maritime space. The call focuses on finding a balance between economic activities and preserving biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. Consortia consisting of knowledge institutions and other organisations (public and private) in the Netherlands and Indonesia can now apply for funding for research projects on this crucial topic. An online information webinar on the call for proposals will take place on 17 September 2024. https://lnkd.in/eV-3mwaM

📣 UN Ocean Decade endorses #HaDEA-managed project NECCTON as Decade Action for predicting and protecting better the ocean biodiversity and food resources. 🌊 The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, or #OceanDecade, seeks to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the ocean system decline and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development. It provides an international framework to develop scientific knowledge and partnerships needed to accelerate advances in ocean science. 🛰 #HorizonEU project NECCTON is transforming Europe's capability to predict and protect the biodiversity of marine ecosystems. By developing new modelling products, it enables the Copernicus Marine Service to better inform ocean policymakers and stakeholders. 🗣 Coordinator Stefano Ciavatta (Mercator Ocean International): “This important endorsement as high-impact Decade Action initiative is a key recognition for the project. This gives us new opportunities of networking with new stakeholders, sharing data and tools, and generating new outcomes and broader impact.” ➡ Read the press release: https://lnkd.in/dWgJpG3F #Copernicus #EUSpaceResearch #BlueEconomy EU Space | Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML)

Check this out: new study confirms seaweed and mussel farms improve biodiversity and abundance of marine life! "Wild fish are widely known to make use of shellfish and seaweed farms, often occurring in much greater numbers inside farms compared to adjacent natural habitats. While fish larvae are thought to settle and recruit to shellfish and seaweed farms, there is little published evidence to support this assumption, especially in temperature ecosystems. Targeting this gap in understanding, the University of Auckland and University of New England, with support from The Nature Conservancy, have been assessing the potential role of coastal aquaculture in providing habitat." - The Fish Site Read more: https://lnkd.in/eEUT3Tai

#Fisheries, #maritime and #coastalcommunities The world’s #oceans are the site of growing tensions. #Overfishing, climate change, resource extraction and other challenges are causing massive degradation of our marine environments, putting the livelihoods of coastal communities at risk. C-SERC is a research leader in this domain, delivering projects on fisheries and aquaculture, maritime environments and societies and their associated political, cultural and economic practices. Our researchers are recognised for novel projects that address pressing sustainable development and marine conservation/restoration questions, from local challenges through to maritime security issues and global governance of the Blue Economy, with particular emphasis on Australia and the Asia- Pacific region. Projects: Valuing coastal fisheries and aquaculture in NSW and Victoria (Fisheries Research and Development Corporation) These two discrete projects delivered a robust evaluation of the contributions that seafood production makes to Australian life. The research found that fisheries and aquaculture play a significant role in sustaining the vitality of coastal areas and deliver a wealth of economic, environmental and social benefits to coastal communities and beyond. These findings provide an evidence base for policymakers and the public to support the fishing and aquaculture industries in New South Wales and Victoria. Coral reef restoration in the Philippines (DFAT, Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research) Restoring coral reefs has the potential to become an important part of maritime ecosystem management, but the restoration process raises a series of governance challenges. This Philippines-based project aims to improve the effectiveness of reef restoration by exploring the underpinning social, economic and political influences that shape it. This research will make an important contribution to ongoing efforts to sustain reef ecosystems around the world.

📢 Leibniz-Institut für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde, one of the EFFECTIVE partners, has published a paper on Perspectives and Scenarios for Coastal Fisheries in a Social-Ecological Context: An Ecosystem Service Assessment Approach in the German Baltic Sea. This approach considers both the ecological health of fisheries and their social importance to coastal communities. 📝🔍 💡The paper investigates how ESAs can assess a fishery's health, including fish stocks, economic factors, and social aspects, along with how different management strategies impact the overall well-being of the fishery. Key highlights include: - ESAs offer a holistic view of fisheries, highlighting their economic and social importance alongside their dependence on healthy ecosystems. - Sustainable management practices, like reduced fishing pressure, benefit both the environment and the long-term viability of fisheries and coastal communities. - This ESA approach is adaptable and can be used in other regions to guide discussions on fisheries management and track societal changes. 👉Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/dj2zZQWt 🌍 Stay tuned for more updates from the world of marine conservation and restoration. #EFFECTIVEproject #marineconservation #HorizonEurope
