WINE CULTURE AND INNOVATION, SUSTAINABILITY, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Congratulations to Piero Schenato who has graduated in International Business Management at the The Berlin School of Economics and Law with an interesting thesis which integrates analyses related to Sustainability, Digitalization and Innovation in the wine sector. It was a great pleasure for us to support his innovative research project by sharing the knowledge we have treasured for generations but also new business development strategies. "My thesis examines the opportunities and challenges of the Italian wine industry through the lens of the force field analysis model, which was shaped significantly by insights gathered from interviews with ZONIN1821. As someone with a passion for agriculture and wines, I felt drawn to this topic, especially considering Zonin's roots in my region, Veneto, and their visionary approach in the industry. By focussing on the unique dynamics of the Veneto wine industry, the paper features intersecting forces such as Research & Development, Sustainability, and Innovation. The findings unravel the complex landscape of the Italian wine sector, integrating perspectives from the Resource-Based View and Dynamic-Capabilities View. CHARLES SYMINGTON IS THE NEW PRESIDENT OF PRIMUM FAMILIAE VINI Each year, Primum Familiae Vini (PFV) – an association of twelve prestigious families from the world of wine – appoints one of its members as President to oversee the association for the year and act as its representative at various events around the world. This year, Charles Symington of Symington Family Estates in Portugal succeeds Véronique Drouhin of Maison Joseph Drouhin in France as PFV President for the period July 2024 to June 2025. Charles Symington: "I am extremely honored to be taking over from my predecessors at Primum Familiae Vini and to support our twelve families who share the same values: the culture of excellence, love and respect for the earth and the terroir, and the powerful desire to remain family-run, independent businesses and transmit the heritage of our ancestors to the next generation. These are particularly exciting times at PFV. The last 12 months have been fruitful under Véronique Drouhin's leadership, with major advances on climate change issues within the technical committee. The event aims to unite experts from various fields to address the complexities of sustainability in the wine industry. Going beyond the basic definition, the conference will delve into how agriculture, responsible for nearly a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, intersects with wine production. Discussions will include the impacts of climate change on wine cultivation and the industry's efforts to mitigate environmental damage. 🍇 The wine industry holds the potential for positive environmental impacts, from enhancing biodiversity to sequestering soil carbon. To achieve this, producers must blend traditional cultivation methods with scientific innovations like precision viticulture and carbon-neutral glass bottles. This global yet fragmented industry must adapt sustainability models to local climatic conditions, leading to various certifications and practices worldwide. 🛒 Consumers often find the sustainability landscape of the wine industry overwhelming. While retailers strive to simplify choices, producers play a crucial role in storytelling and transparency. By making sustainability part of their brand narrative, they can guide consumers in making informed choices. The diverse geographic spread of wine production means there are multiple "right" answers, making a universal sustainability model impractical. 🌍 Collaboration is key to advancing sustainability in the wine sector. A new event, Sustainability in Drinks (SID), will further this cause.
