This article on True North from the Mackinac Center for Public Policy warns that our nation’s electricity grid operators, regulators, and reliability watchdogs alike testify that closing fossil fuel and nuclear electricity generation poses an imminent threat to the reliability of the power grid. The latest federal forecast for power plant additions shows #solarenergy sweeping with 58% of all new utility-scale generating capacity this year. In an upset, #batterystorage will provide the second-most new capacity, with 23%. #windpower delivers a modest 13%, while the long-delayed final nuclear reactor at Vogtle in Georgia will add 2% of new capacity, assuming it does in fact arrive this year. That leaves fossil gas with just 4% of new power plant capacity, a decidedly meager showing for the fuel that still produces the most electricity annually.

A key moment for US energy - wind and solar are now the second most important source of power in the US, moving ahead of nuclear as of June 2024.

On Friday, Constellation Energy said that it has plans to reopen the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania, the site of a nuclear meltdown that destroyed the second reactor at the power station in 1979. The plant, which continued to operate safely for years after the accident, was eventually closed down in 2019 for economic reasons. But the conditions that led to its shutdown no longer hold, as demand for clean electricity soars thanks to growing demand for data centers. That has made boring old utilities stocks the best performers in the S&P 500 Index this year (chart), with Constellation Energy shares contributing significantly to that trend, having gained more than 120% in 2024. But where are America’s nuclear power plants? We’ve mapped out the location of all 54, according to data from the Energy Information Administration. Once operational, Three Mile Island would be the fifth nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. Only Illinois, which has 6 nuclear plants, would have more. The rest are predominantly in eastern states, although the country’s largest is Palo Verde Station in Arizona, which has a total capacity of 3,937 megawatts — enough to power some 4 million homes.

The two new advanced AP1000® PWR reactors at Plant Vogtle were named “Power Plant of the Year” by POWER magazine, well-deserved recognition for Southern Nuclear, Georgia Power Company and the tremendous effort by thousands of professionals who contributed to the project. Vogtle Units 3 and 4 both came online in the last 12 months. The magazine highlighted the reactors’ awesome performance so far. “Vogtle Unit 3’s initial performance has exceeded our expectations,” John Williams, Southern Nuclear senior vice president for Vogtle 3 and 4, told POWER. “Since it began commercial operation in July 2023, Unit 3 has operated at greater than 98% capacity factor, running at 100% since commercial operation was declared with the exception of a planned five-day maintenance outage.” That exceeds the #NuclearEnergy industry average of 93% capacity! Combined, the two AP1000 reactors are churning out enough clean energy to power 1 million homes.
