Innovations like solar-powered pumps and smart water management are making waves, and funding from the World Bank, UN, and private partnerships is increasing to support WASH projects. Ensuring Access to Clean Water in Cameroon: A Call for Sustainable Solutions Access to clean water is a basic human right, but millions of Cameroonians continue to lack it. Cameroon's water crisis is complex, with causes including inadequate infrastructure, economic constraints, and geographical barriers. However, several stakeholders, including the government, NGOs, and local communities, are actively engaging in attempts to enhance Cameroon's access to clean water. As we observe World Water Day on March 22nd, it is critical to raise awareness, educate, and advocate for sustainable water resource management. Let us explore the importance of clean water, applaud the efforts of the government and organizations, and encourage participation in local communities. Access to clean water is vital for health, dignity, and development. Polluted water sources contribute to the spread of waterborne diseases, leading to illness and mortality, especially among children and vulnerable groups. Limited access to clean water reinforces the cycle of poverty by reducing economic productivity and aggravating inequalities. Therefore, ensuring access to clean water is crucial for improving public health, reducing poverty, and promoting overall socio-economic development. The Cameroonian government has initiated policies and programs to improve water infrastructure and promote hygiene and sanitation practices. These initiatives are commendable, but challenges such as funding limits and bureaucratic hurdles persist. Recognizing the government's efforts and encouraging continued investment in water infrastructure to achieve universal access to clean water. Non-profit organizations play a crucial role in providing clean water solutions to underserved communities in Cameroon. NGOs implement projects such as drilling boreholes, constructing water wells, and promoting water conservation and hygiene education. Their actions have made a significant impact on improving access to clean water in various regions. It is essential to join and encourage these organizations to ensure the sustainability of their initiatives. Empowering communities to take ownership of water projects fosters sustainability and resilience. Community-based initiatives, such as water committees and self-help groups, are instrumental in maintaining and managing water sources. Engaging with local communities and involving them in decision-making processes will not only ensure the success of water projects but also promote a sense of ownership and responsibility. Addressing the water crisis in Cameroon requires sustainable and innovative solutions that prioritize long-term impact and environmental stewardship. Africa’s race to achieve #SDG6, water and sanitation for all, has been shockingly slow. But in the African Union Mind the Gap – Invest in Water campaign, African leaders commit to mobilising US$30bn per year by 2030. The picture is not all grim but the private sector must follow suit. There is vast potential for private business to help change Africa’s course as 2030 quickly approaches. It’s not too late for water and sanitation for all. The solutions must be rapidly deployable, mobile, scalable, and relevant to the real needs of people on the ground. From my experience in the water sector, while many institutions worry too much about financing as a crucial component for quality water services, accountability and enhancing customer service are equally vital pillars for sustainable and equitable access to clean water. Unfortunately, the latter two have not been taken seriously in the sector for so long. eWATERservices is doing things differently ensuring 24/7 access of clean, affordable and dependable water services in rural communities.
