This week's #digest includes a #study by OHT’s Dr. Srikanth Reddy on how #health status impacts #labor outcomes for middle-aged and older adults in India. #Illhealth impacts labor force participation globally, yet #age differences are often overlooked. The study addresses this gap by examining how ill health affects labor outcomes among different age groups in India. Data from over 72,000 individuals aged 45 and above from the Longitudinal #Ageing Study show that ill-health reduces labor participation by 28 percent for middle-aged and 36 percent for elderly individuals. The impact on #wages and hours worked varies by age, with elderly individuals being more affected. This week's digest covers a #study by OHT researchers Amit Summan, Arindam Nandi,, and Ramanan Laxminarayan on #nutritional outcomes in #children under five post-COVID. They analyzed data from India’s National Family Health Survey 2019-2021 to assess post-COVID nutritional outcomes among children. The study revealed that under-five children had 1.2 percent higher #underweight rates, 0.10 percent lower #height-for-age Z-scores, and 0.04 percent lower weight-for-height Z-scores than children of the same #age in the pre-#pandemic period. Although a partial recovery was observed in the post-pandemic period between 2020 and 2021, some outcomes, including #weight, did not fully recover, especially among children from #rural and low-income households. Exciting update from the USDA! In November, the USDA awarded the Nutrition Incentive Program Training, Technical Assistance, Evaluation and Information (NTAE) Center program, led by the Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition (GSCN), $28 million over four years. GSCN will expand its training, technical assistance, evaluation and informational support services to more than 200 Nutrition Incentive (NI) and Produce Prescription Program (PPR) grantees nationwide. Through our online platform the Nutrition Incentive Hub will continue evaluating key areas of the program, including: 💸 Economic impact through vouchers at sites such as grocery stores and farmer’s markets 🍎 Participant and patient health outcomes 🌐 Communities impacted based on location and demographics There are three aims with this round of funding: 1.) An emphasis on reaching 28 underrepresented communities and geographies in the United States that currently lack NI/PPR programs. These include rural, remote, insular, and tribal communities; communities of color; LBGTQIA+; individuals with disabilities; Veterans; communities with residents predominantly living under the Federal poverty line. 2.) Optimization of the GusNIP audience experience through partnerships and technologies that maximize USDA/NIFA's return on investment. This includes a new GusNIP Learning Circle that is being developed to inform outreach, capacity building, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA)-centered training and technical assistance, reporting and evaluation, and to address emerging needs. 3.) Rigorous evaluation centered on DEIA principles. This includes updating the core measures through a community engaged approach to ensure that measures are culturally tailored and right sized for the project’s evaluation capacity. We are beyond thrilled to continue our partnership with the GusNIP NTAE and look forward to many more milestones and findings to explore through a health equity lens. Stay tuned for our Year 4 Findings report set to be released in June!

🤩🤝We've prioritized linking arms with our healthcare workforce to equip these important community leaders with the science and tools to guide their patient communities in eating more plants and for personal habit change. While many of the leading causes of death and disability in our community are largely lifestyle-related, doctors receive less than 1% of their medical training in nutrition. It's time to equip our healthcare workforce and community members with essential tools to lead with prevention and effective lifestyle interventions. When you support our work, you’re helping us to invest in our local healthcare partners by expanding our healthcare training programs. Our healthcare partners are quickly growing and in 2023 we provided training opportunities and resources to members of our local Promotores community, the community health team at Sansum Diabetes Research Institute, and clinicians at the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics. There's an exciting readiness to learn and educate and here's some of what we've heard back: 🍓Experienced health benefits from metabolic, to weight improvements, to overall feeling great 🥦Excitement about grocery cost savings 🍉Surprise at how simple, enjoyable and familiar meals can still be swapping in more plants 🍊Pride in feeling like they can make a meaningful difference sharing their experience and knowledge 🌽Deepened connection to cultural foods and roots 🥕Curiosity about the lack of nutrition training for healthcare providers 🍎Enthusiasm in new opportunities and tools to lower risk, improve, and potentially reverse conditions like type 2 diabetes where much focus has traditionally been on disease management and genetics Follow the link to learn how you can help us expand healthcare training and resources across Santa Barbara County! https://lnkd.in/d8PDXkqT Photo Credit: Oscar Gutierrez #RootedSantaBarbara #RootedSBC #PlantBasedEating #Community #Health #PlantBase #SantaBarbara #FruitsAndVeggies #FiberFocusMonth #Fiber #January #FoodbankSBC #PreventativeHealth

For our August Issue Campaign on #SDG4 #QualityEducation, we recognize not all education happens in a classroom. In the case of our member, Sukarya NGO, they go to the locations where education is needed most. We've previously highlighted—and for good reason—their Education on Wheels program for children in slums, and equally as important is their Urban Slum Health Action Programme (USHA). USHA was launched in 2014 in Gurugram and Delhi with the aim of detecting, treating, and preventing anemia and malnutrition amongst mothers [15-49 years] and children [up to 5 years]. The project aims to improve the maternal and child health (MCH) status of mothers and infants, reduce infant mortality rate (IMR) and morbidity amongst children and mothers and improve overall knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of communities towards MCH and nutrition. It has literally transformed many thousands of lives. https://lnkd.in/gtv3g2W2 Article published on 12th February, 2024 on the JAMA Network on so-called ‘zero food children’ in India is deliberate & malicious attempt to sensationalize fake news The Ministry of Women and Child Development has said that the article published on 12th February, 2024 on the JAMA Network on the so-called zero food children in India is a deliberate and malicious attempt by interested lobbies to sensationalize fake news.Rebutting the article , the Ministry has said that it is surprising that no primary research has been conducted by Mr. S. V. Subramanian and co-authors in the study to arrive at such broad and incorrect generalizations on the nutritional status of children in India.

"March is designated as the National Month of Nutrition in India, aligning with the nation's transition from Swachh (cleanliness) to Swasth (health). The theme for this month is "Feeding Smart, right from the Start." It's concerning to note that approximately 30-40 percent of the general population is affected by fatty liver disease, a trend increasingly impacting younger children. There is a critical need to prioritize the consumption of wholesome, nourishing foods that provide essential energy for growth and development."- Raj Bhandari, Member Health & Nutrition Task Force of Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India, Millets Task Force & National Technical Board of Nutrition, Government of India Official at the 8th Edition of Times Now Asian Business Leaders Conclave 2024 Themed "Transform, Transcend, Triumph."
