Did you know that occupational therapists (OTs) play a vital role in rebuilding lives after orthopedic injuries? 💪 Here’s how they make a difference: 1️⃣ Functional Rehabilitation: OTs focus on restoring daily activities like dressing, cooking, and working. 2️⃣ Pain Management: Through tailored self-management techniques, OTs help manage pain and discomfort. 3️⃣ Home Modifications: OTs assess home environments and recommend modifications and/or equipment to enhance safety and accessibility.

How does OT and CST help with tethered oral tissues (TOTs), also known as oral ties? Occupational therapy oral exercises strengthen and improve the coordination of oral muscles involved in chewing, swallowing, and speech. We educate parents and caregivers on effective strategies to continue therapy goals at home to improve skills. Craniosacral therapy gently addresses tension and restrictions caused by tongue, lip, or cheek ties, promoting proper oral mobility. In infants, releasing these restrictions enhances the baby’s ability to latch, breastfeed, and suck effectively, allowing for a smoother feeding experience.

✔📚 Hemispheric Stroke Scale 📚✔ (link below) Here is another FREE occupational therapy evaluation that you can put to use! The Hemispheric Stroke Scale is a graded neurologic assessment instrument and was designed for non-comatose adults with signs of acute ischemia or infarction in carotid circulation. The HSS includes the Glasgow Coma Scale because the GCS is an accepted method for assessing the level of consciousness in neurologically impaired patients. The score from the GCS is inverted so that higher scores equate to more severe symptoms. https://lnkd.in/e2qyvgJ9

DOWNLOAD HERE!!📌 https://lnkd.in/en49HfVd 📌 The objectives of this systematic review were (1) to identify, evaluate, and synthesize the research literature of relevance to occupational therapy regarding interventions for work-related shoulder conditions and (2) to interpret and apply the research literature to occupational therapy. Twenty-two studies were reviewed for this study—16 of Level I evidence, 2 of Level II evidence, and 4 of Level III evidence. In this systematic review, limited evidence from Level I studies was found to support exercise for shoulder pain; manual therapy and laser for adhesive capsulitis; conservative management of shoulder instability; early intervention without immobilization for specific, nondisplaced proximal humerus fractures; and exercise, joint mobilizations, and laser for patients with shoulder impingement.

To ease joint pain, you can try: 1. Using a heating pad or taking a warm bath or shower to loosen joints and relax muscles 2. Applying ice packs for swelling. 3. Taking over-the-counter pain medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen sodium 4. Using supportive aids like braces, canes, or orthotic devices 5. Doing exercises that straighten your elbow, like pushing away light objects 6. Physical or occupational therapy

An interesting intervention for OT in this LVAD program. There are so many ways specialized programs could benefit with OT as part of the team. OT is highly undervalued and underutilized. Where I see the great need based on my career in acute care, OP, and home care- oncology rehab, spine, pain, and pulmonary.
Excited to share our new research article on the development, clinical feasibility, and initial four-year findings from an occupational therapy pre-operative evaluation approach to support the complex functional needs of adults with advanced heart failure undergoing LVAD candidacy. Until 3/22/24, you can use the link below to download the full-text article for free from Heart and Lung: Journal of Cardiopulmonary and Acute Care: https://lnkd.in/epnkFVkU
