When a recent study linking semaglutide to an increased risk of Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION) was published in JAMA Ophthalmology, Atropos Health Clinical Advisory Board (CAB) member, Dr. David Klonoff decided to take a closer look. Dr. Klonoff leveraged Atropos Health to generate RWE and publish a paper "Real-World Evidence Assessment of the Risk of Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy in Patients Prescribed Semaglutide" with Dr Gavin Hui and Dr Saurabh Gombar. Just published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology 🇨🇦: In a single-center, 967-patient sample of first-time, isolated mitral TEER procedures performed between 2013 and 2021, individuals aged above (n=103, 10.7%) and under 90 years experienced similarly high technical success rates and comparable improvement in MR severity and functional capacity as well as survival and heart failure hospitalizations along the first postprocedural year. This was also demonstrated in a 204-case, 1:1 propensity score matched sub-cohort. Our results reflect the apparent feasibility, safety, and efficacy of mitral TEER in the ever-growing, yet constantly under-represented nonagenarian population. Do you think patients would be as likely to enrol in a #clinicaltrial if it meant additional invasive poking and prodding? Over 50% of patients with #Crohn’s disease develop strictures over their lifetime; the most common location is the terminal Ileum (TI) [1]. The TI is tricky to reach and scopes can't assess critical transmural complications. To track treatment responses we need other imaging options: #MRE or intestinal #ultrasound . Whilst MRE is a good option, Ultrasound, is generally preferred by patients, is quick, and low-cost for providers. But… Cathy Lu et al found there's little to no consensus on definitions, diagnosis or treatment targets when using IUS to asses strictures. They also found variability in IUS stricture definitions, with bowel wall thickness, luminal narrowing, and prestenotic dilation parameters being inconsistently applied in a review of 56 studies. The study emphasises the need for standardisation in IUS definitions, image acquisition, and technical parameters to establish IUS as a reliable tool for diagnosing and monitoring CD strictures. The ultimate goal is to develop a structured program for a validated IUS index, crucial for advancing anti-stricture therapies in CD. Pregabalin is a widely prescribed drug not routinely associated with sinus bradycardia. A 39 year old male, presented having taken about 4g of pregablin with intention to self-harm. Following admission, he subsequently developed bradycardia on telemetry. Other possible causes were excluded with serial investigations. The bradycardia resolved by 96 hours without the need for temporary pacing.
