The Ossian team has been working with NIRAS and SPEA to develop a long-term plan to reduce bycatch of Northern gannet in Portuguese fisheries, building on previous work completed by SPEA over the last 13 years. 📝 Last week our offshore consents manager, Fraser Malcolm, attended the 16th International Seabird Conference at Coimbra University in Portugal. SPEA and Niras, in collaboration with Ossian, presented findings on bycatch monitoring and how mitigation could be used to support the application for the Ossian wind farm. 🐦 Full details of the Compensation measures and the wider Derogation Case can be read here: https://lnkd.in/ehcEgwxg #OssianWindFarm #RenewableEnergy #ResearchStudy

Last week, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy Marianne Sivertsen Næss presented the government's business plans at sea. As a representative of the offshore wind industry, I find most of the 10 principles for use of marine area relevant. For me, it is precisely the need to facilitate a green transition that is important, where offshore wind is a key. But this must happen in good coexistence with fisheries and environmental interests, and through knowledge sharing and efficient use of our marine areas. Taking care of this, we can ensure a long-term acceptance for offshore wind development on the Norwegian continental shelf. DNV has been chosen by Norwegian authorities to carry out a strategic impact assessment for offshore aquaculture in Norway. The assessment includes the areas Norskerenna South, Frøyabanken North and Trænabanken. The impact assessment will be carried out to illuminate the environmental impact of establishing aquaculture of salmon, trout and rainbow trout within the three defined areas, as well as assess fish welfare considerations and coexistence with other marine industries. The assessment will help ensure responsible practices and industry development as the cultivation of sustainable offshore aquaculture is explored. The findings will form the basis for the Norwegian authorities' decision as to whether all or parts of an area may be suitable for offshore aquaculture, and which parts of the area should be announced first. The work will be carried out from April to October 2024. "DNV is proud to support Norwegian authorities on this important project. With more than 30 years of experience with impact assessments in the Norwegian offshore environment, our team of environmental risk experts led by Eirik Færøy Sæbø look forward to contributing to the further development of offshore aquaculture and sustainable food chains," says Jan Egil Sæberg, vice president business development Norway, Energy Systems at DNV. Sea Grant and NOAA Fisheries partner to invest $1 million to advance understanding of fishing community interactions with offshore wind development The Northeast Sea Grant Consortium, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center, announces a research funding opportunity to improve understanding of fishing community interactions with offshore wind development in the Northeast U.S. This funding partnership builds on successes from research funding awarded in 2022. The current opportunity will continue to advance a regional approach and seeks to enhance existing and catalyze new human dimensions research relevant to the priorities outlined in the request for proposals. The funding opportunity focuses on advancing social, cultural, historical, and economic research to inform communities, developers, and other decision-makers. Proposals that utilize qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches from across the social sciences and humanities are encouraged. Approximately $1 million will be available to support projects in three topical research areas: - Offshore Wind Development Planning and Engagement - Understanding Fisheries and Offshore Wind Development Interactions - Monitoring of Offshore Wind Development and Fisheries Interactions As the U.S. begins to deploy renewable energy technologies in the region – from New York Bight through the Gulf of Maine – the Northeast Sea Grant Consortium and NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center seek collaborative, multidisciplinary, and innovative proposals with results that bridge research, fishing community, and management needs. The funding competition is accepting letters of intent to submit proposals from eligible researchers for projects located in the Northeast through February 15, 2024, with full proposals due April 1, 2024. An informational webinar will be held January 24, 2024. #sutainabilty #solar #windenergy #fishing

Corals and sponges play an important ecological role in deep-sea environments such as offshore Newfoundland and Labrador. Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada (DFO) has recently developed and published Regional Guidance on Measures to Protect Corals and Sponges, which oil and gas operators are required to implement prior to conducting exploratory drilling in the Canada–Newfoundland and Labrador offshore area. That’s why we’ve launched a call for proposals to design, organize and facilitate a two-day workshop to share best practices and lessons learned from using DFO’s guidance. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Boardman in Maryland issued her summary judgment decision in the GOM BiOp case. Judge Boardman ruled the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Services' Biological Opinion was flawed and did not adequately address risks species face from oil spills and vessel strikes, and vacated the BiOp as of December 20, 2024. We are deeply disappointed in the order, including the decision to vacate the current biological opinion even as the agencies are currently working to revise it. The disruptive consequences to the Gulf of Mexico states and the U.S. economy cannot be understated if the federal agencies fail to timely issue a new biological opinion. A timely completion of the revised biological opinion should be their highest priority. Any disruptions would not only impact the hundreds of thousands of energy workers in the region but could increase energy insecurity by jeopardizing a significant amount of oil production coming from the Gulf of Mexico, nearly 15% of the U.S. total. #GOM #BiOp #biologicalopinion Read more on this topic here: https://lnkd.in/gagXPX38
