By chance, Olivier from Zocalo was in London at the same time I was and suggested we see the David Hockney exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery. While I've had a vague interest in Hockney's work, was completely taken off guard by his mastery of color, form and material. Grateful Olivier thought of this destination. A few thoughts came to mind: -- Pre or post art wandering, museums cafés are excellent places to discuss business. The setting is conducive to deeper thought and reflection, and so better, quieter conversations. -- Peril comes to all cities who do not invest and support culture. Economic engines are located where magnificent architecture, museums, operas, symphonies, libraries are found. Pure market trade or a singular focus on sports lend themselves to a superficial and transactional ethos (a football match has more to do with social identity than life-changing outcomes). Rarely do you find big ideas in these environments. Not discounting the value of football, nor dismissing street art and poetry slams, nor fashion and pop-ups, nor the utility of startups and the other elements of civic life. Just saying big cultural institutions are often overlooked for their public service, economic backbone and--critically undervalued--as places to ponder or spark meaningful discussions.

For the sixth year, Time Out has published its annual popularity contest of the 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world. This year, Haven – the Copenhagen Harbour – took fourth place. Over 12,000 people voted for the shortlist, which was then narrowed down ‘with the insight and expertise of city editors and local experts who know their cities better than anyone else’. “What are the places locals love and visitors flock to? Where are the exciting new openings across food, drink and culture? Where are people going out, hanging out and having fun?” writes the media. “To create and rank the final list, we considered factors including community and social ventures, access to open and green space, and thriving street life.” Havnen’s cool credentials Time Out picked out a few venues to highlight Havnen’s cool credentials: “The Royal Danish Theatre and its hangout space Ofelia Plads overlook the water, and the Kissing Bridge leads to the brand-new Opera Park. But the whole area is seeing a host of new openings, including much-hyped bakery Hart Bageri Holmen and the new ‘urban oasis’ at Papiroen” Time Out’s top five coolest cities in the world: 1. Madame de Staël's Salon was a haven for thinkers, writers, politicians, and artists. It emphasized open dialogue and the exchange of ideas, similar to 'Les Salons'. This gathering challenged norms, questioned assumptions, and fostered creative collaborations. A significant impact of Madame de Staël's Salon was shaping the intellectual landscape of her time. Discussions there challenged conventional thinking, laying the groundwork for the Romantic movement and the spread of new ideas across Europe. EG EDITOR’S COMMENT The sun was definitely shining in Cannes and there was definitely a decent amount of upbeat chat around pivot, inflection and turning points, but the conference definitely felt a little different this year. It appeared smaller – at least from a UK perspective. It was less busy inside the confines of the event barriers and even the usual haunts of New York New York and Bar Roma seemed to be more easily accessible. There were no swarms of people desperate to do deals with each other over an overpriced rosé or beer. The UK’s big cities were still in attendance, but it was definitely more muted. And while investment minister Lord Dominic Johnson was there again, fulfilling his job as the “UK’s greatest salesman”, there wasn’t launch after launch after launch of major regeneration opportunities. Sciontec, the developer jointly owned by Liverpool John Moores University, the University of Liverpool, Liverpool City Council and Bruntwood SciTech, announced plans to create 350,000 sq ft of new laboratories and workspace in Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter; Cardiff was pitching for more than £1bn of investment to transform the former Aberthaw power station into a green energy hub; and Opportunity London chief executive Jace Tyrrell was never seen without his “London: Bursting with opportunity” sign. And there was, of course, the launch of the search for a development partner to bring forward the £725m resi-led redevelopment of Forth Yards in Newcastle, as revealed by EG. Homes England, which bought the site out of administration last month, has appointed Avison Young to find the partner. But that was about it. However, whether the grand launches and the big deal chat was there or not – even the usual gossip about the merger of two well-known agencies didn’t really take off – there were conversations happening.
