Shorewinner is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at developing a Southern European offshore wind energy Community of Practice (#CoP). The project unites five Centres of Vocational Excellence (#CoVEs) from Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus to enhance education and training in offshore renewable energy. In a significant stride towards sustainable energy, Fiji's State House launched its 18.25 KW solar system, marking a momentous partnership with Solar Head of State. 🇫🇯 This initiative signifies the collective commitment of Pacific Island Countries (PICs) towards mitigating carbon footprints and aligning with the 2030 Agenda as it solarizes head-of-state residences and buildings of national importance across 11 PICs. The project is funded by the India-UN Development Partnership Fund with private sector support from Solaria Corporation, managed by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), and implemented by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) symbolizes a unifying commitment toward a greener future for the Pacific region. Drilling rigs in nature reserves: Tensions heighten as Philippine clean energy projects encroach on conservation areas Summary: Tensions have escalated in the Philippines as the expansion of clean energy projects encroaches on protected conservation areas, with a significant conflict emerging over a proposed wind farm in the Masungi Georeserve in Rizal province. This georeserve, known for its distinctive limestone rock formations and stewardship of 2,700 hectares of forestland, faces a threat from drilling operations for 12 wind turbines. Conservationists argue that renewable energy should not come at the expense of fragile ecosystems, emphasizing that up to a thousand hectares of karst landscape could be endangered. The conflict underscores a troubling trend in the Philippines, where the aggressive push for renewable energy capacity to address climate change often overlooks community and environmental rights. While the Philippine government aims to increase its renewable energy share to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040, conservation advocates stress the need for these projects to be located on already-developed lands to avoid damaging critical natural habitats. Despite legal frameworks like the National Integrated Protected Areas System Act, amendments now allow renewable energy projects in natural parks if approved by relevant authorities. Conservationists urge that these protected areas be designated as "no-go" zones for early-stage renewable energy planning to safeguard biodiversity and ecosystem services. The Masungi Georeserve conflict is part of a larger issue, with similar concerns arising in other regions, such as the Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park. The push for economic growth and renewable energy investment often clashes with the need to protect vital watershed resources and biodiversity. Here is one example of this: #Valmiera, situated in Vidzeme region, Valmiera Country, Latvia. 🌍 Valmiera is the eighth largest city in Latvia, the Vidzeme region’s administrative and economic development, education, culture and sports centre. In the Municipal Development Program of Valmiera for 2022-2028, climate change policy (#GreenDeal) is defined as one of the horizontal priorities. In August 2022, prompted by the CEESEU project activities, local politicians decided the county municipality would join the Covenant of Mayors - Europe. Main activities for the next 7 years: ✅ reducing the amount of energy consumed by using renewable energy technologies ✅ changing the thinking and habits of the population ✅ expanding the energy management system throughout the county  It is crucial to promote green procurement and the construction of low-consumption wooden buildings. The municipality will purposefully work on the transition to using renewable energy resources of local origin in heat supply and electricity generation. Last week was an all round great week making progress with Restore's development as a business 🎆 . The highlight was, without question, a beautiful dinner at the German Ambassador to Ireland's residence to meet with the visiting Minister of State for EU and Climate and discuss the endless potential we have in the EU to be leaders in the renewable energy space along with the possible collaboration opportunities between countries. I was in exceptional and admirable company with representatives from Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Wind Energy Ireland, HydrogenIreland, Friends of the Earth 🌟 Some key discussion points regarding marine biodiversity and offshore energy infrastructural developments ➡ - Keeping the topic of biodiversity high on the agendas and action plans at EU level isn't without its struggle, but is recognised as needing more priority. 🍃 - We need to develop a 'common language' for biodiversity footprint and ensure robust, standardised monitoring plans are developed for measuring implemented solutions 🌳 - Shared learning and methods of data exchange across our member states is essential in order to progress the sector in the most sustainable and responsible manner 🌍 - Our common connectedness to nature, as a measurable psychological construct, is something undervalued and often under recognised 🌻 - We need more of a focus on impactful communication with stakeholders and the wider public to highlight the necessity and resulting positives of our offshore renewable energy developments in an effort to help increase social acceptability 👭 #marinebiodiversity #greenenergy #eugreendeal #renewableenergy #biodiversity #biodiversitynetgain #potential

We have a real intersection of urgent actions that need to be taken - biodiversity protection and repair, energy transition and communities with housing pressures. There are already mechanisms under the EPBC Act that allow for landscape assessments, we have regional planning frameworks at a state level and we have a lot of data. None of it is perfect, but it’s time for good (not perfect) planning that brings together biodiversity, energy and community and gives certainty (and therefore $) to let projects go ahead in the right place while also identifying valuable nature repair investments and smart community involvement. We have clever, can do people who can do this, we can make existing laws work the way they should, we just need coordination and a mandate and that has to be led by governments.

There have been dramatic investments in energy conservation and efficiency measures while replacing fossil based power sources with renewable energy. The World Bank and the United Nations Development Program are reporting such measures are some of the most economical solutions to chronic energy outages, power shortages, and more environmentally sensitive alternatives to increased energy production for China's expanding economy as those of India, Brazil, South Africa, Russia, among others.
