The Anacostia High School students, who participated in our program, wrote poems about their experiences with the nature and wildlife they experienced. The sentiments the students share in the book highlight the vital role that youth and under-resourced communities play in saving wildlife and their habitats. “We wanted them to write about the environment through the lens of their own personal experiences as residents of Anacostia, as students of Anacostia High School, as young people, as young African Americans." While some universities may appreciate the summer you spent working at a café, recognizing your punctuality, resilience, and determination, Oxford and Cambridge place a higher value on "super-curricular" work experience. What does super-curricular mean? Super-curricular activities are those undertaken outside of school that align with the curriculum of the subject you intend to study. For example, if you aspire to study History at Oxbridge and spent a few weeks working at a museum, this would be an exemplary addition to your personal statement. This applies to other relevant experiences, such as working at an elderly home for prospective medical students, a library for English students, or a gallery for art students. For STEM subjects, securing work placements without higher education can be challenging. However, participating in competitions and engaging in subject-related after-school clubs also qualify as super-curricular activities and should be prominently featured on your personal statement. Remember, super-curricular experiences demonstrate your passion and commitment to your chosen field outside of school, thereby enhancing the strength of your application!
