Yesterday, our CEO, James Goth, proudly handed over a food waste petition signed by more than 26,800 of our incredible community members to Minister for the Environment Tanya Plibersek. 🙌 This petition highlights the urgent need for bold government action to cut food waste in Australia. 🌏✨ Together, we’re calling on the Minister to: - Shake up the food labelling system to reduce food waste - Support businesses committed to reducing food waste for good - Endorse the National Food Donation Tax Incentive - Increase support for organics collections (for that unavoidable food waste!) With this petition, we’re sending a clear message: It's time to make fighting food waste a priority. 💪🍽️ With only 5 years left to reach our national target of halving food waste by 2030, what are we waiting for?! Thank you to over 26,800 of you who signed and supported this important cause. Your voice matters, and change is possible when we stand together!

The 2024 Foodbank Australia Hunger Report revealed that nearly 2 million Australian households faced severe food insecurity in the past year. At End Food Waste Australia, we believe that fighting food waste is fighting food insecurity. No one should go hungry when perfectly edible food goes to waste. That's why we work with #AustralianFoodPact signatories across the supply chain, to enhance food donations while minimising food waste. Working with food rescue organisations such as Foodbank Australia, SecondBite, FareShare and OzHarvest enables us to keep edible food in the supply chain and get it to those who need it most. If you are seeking solutions to address food waste, we are here to help. Last week, the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor, Dame Juliet Gerrard, and her team at the OPMCSA launched the final reports and recommendations on food loss and waste. Read the summary here ➡️ https://bit.ly/4f1Cm11 This research from Dr Gerrard and team at the Office of the PMCSA, was ambitious in it's broad scope and level of detail looking at all aspects of food loss, food rescue and food waste in Aotearoa. The multi-phased research project kicked off a couple of years ago, including visiting Kaibosh as part of their deep dive to understand more about food rescue. New Zealand Food Waste Champions 12.3 Charitable Trust (NZFWC 12.3 Trust) are leading the way with businesses through their Kai Commitment Programme. Kaibosh was also pleased to hear that the Honourable Penny Simmonds, Minister for the Environment, confirmed the government's commitment to ensuring that good food gets to people and that the environmental, social, and economic benefits of reducing food waste are a quick win on the government's agenda. In summary, Aotearoa needs to do these five things to reach #ZeroFoodWaste: 1⃣ Save good food for people 2⃣ Prevent food waste at its source 3⃣ Measure and monitor our food loss and waste 4⃣ All food waste to be diverted – with no place left for landfill 5⃣ Establish a national food loss and waste strategy and reduction target #FoodSystem #FoodWaste #FoodRescue #FoodResilience

"System problems need system solutions, from farm to fork" 👩🌾🍽 Here's a great summary from Kaitlin Dawson on the recent food waste report released last week. Watch on the link below 👇
Key food waste recommendations for accelerating progress. In her role as the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor, Dame Juliet Gerrard and her team were charged with creating an evidence base for food waste action in Aotearoa. We were privileged to be among the many brilliant stakeholders and experts who supported this work, and to launch the final reports and recommendations to government at our Leading Action on Food Waste event in Auckland a couple of weeks ago. Food waste is a complex issue, so not surprisingly, the recommendations for action are many and wide-ranging. This summary aims to provide a high-level overview of the key themes and recommendations, as well as share what we see as priority areas that New Zealand Food Waste Champions 12.3 Charitable Trust (NZFWC 12.3 Trust) will be working with government and industry to act on now. We all touch food and food waste, these affect all of us. Take a few minutes to hear the recommendations, read a summary and access the reports here https://lnkd.in/gVyejPAP #foodwaste #policy #foodsystem #collaboration

Last Wednesday (23rd October), WasteMINZ and New Zealand Food Waste Champions 12.3 Charitable Trust (NZFWC 12.3 Trust) brought together experts, businesses, and changemakers with a shared vision to explore the collaboration required to support Aotearoa’s moves to reduce our food waste and delve into the data behind the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor’s latest food waste report. Here are some of the key takeaways from the Food Waste Summit, which are also helpfully illustrated in the image below! 🧐 Know vs. Need to Know: During facilitated interactive break-out sessions, we worked on plotting ourselves on the food waste ecosystem, diving into the data we do and don’t have, the drivers of our food waste and how we can better collaborate for impact. 🤝 Collaboration in Action: We saw inspiring stories of collaboration. Foodstuffs South Island shared how they’re supporting communities through supply chain donations, while groups like Kai Grow and Cherry Rescue Project are making a difference locally. 🔄 Shift Action: It’s clear - we need to build a culture of change! The focus is on choosing actionable steps and working on “low-hanging fruit” to make immediate progress. ✨ Next Steps: The Food Waste Summit highlighted the urgency of gathering more data, cultivating community change, and normalising new behaviours to reach our target through a National Food Waste Strategy. Overall, it was a great Summit to be apart of and to help facilitate the breakout sessions! 💪 #LoveFoodHateWasteNZ #SustainabilityNZ #FoodWasteAction #wastemnz Love Food Hate Waste NZ

Did you know that globally, an estimated 40% of food does not make it from the paddock and packhouse to the plate? Food waste is responsible for 6-8% of global carbon emissions. At the same time, even though Aotearoa produces enough calories to feed 20 million people, one in five tamariki live in households that experience moderate to severe food insecurity. Join WasteMINZ and New Zealand Food Waste Champions 12.3 Charitable Trust (NZFWC 12.3 Trust) for the the 3rd Te Hui Taumata Moumou Kai o Aotearoa – New Zealand Food Waste Summit, being hosted online. The summit is open to anyone who is interested in reducing food waste or is part of the food value chain – growers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, hospitality industry, food rescuers, researchers and anywhere in between! We'll be exploring the collaboration required to support Aotearoa’s moves to reduce our food waste and delving into the data behind the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor’s latest food waste report. Today is International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste 🍏 A day which calls on public and private actors across the food sector, as well as consumers, to unite in reducing food loss and waste. In relation to that, Denmark launched its first national food waste strategy in March this year with the aim to reduce food loss and waste, and for years Danish companies, think tanks and organisations have made initiatives towards preventing food waste. Among them is Stop Wasting Food movement (Stop Spild Af Mad), which is Denmark’s largest non-profit movement against food waste. The organisation have achieved multiple results in Denmark in collaboration with the Danish Government, EU and UN. Read more about the Danish strategy here: https://lnkd.in/dgsgrGbc... 🌱 The White House has just released a strategy to tackle a major national issue: food waste. Did you know that roughly 30% of the country's food supply goes uneaten and ends up in landfills, contributing to harmful greenhouse gas emissions? 🍽️ The new strategy focuses on changing both business and individual behaviors to reduce waste, while also investing in research to extend the shelf life of perishable foods and promote food donations. #WorldFoodDay Food is culture and identity… and it is too precious to be wasted! This year, the Global initiative is under the theme 'Right to foods for a better life and a better future'. #stopfoodwaste #foodwastereduction #foodwasteawareness #WorldFoodDay2024
Around 132 kilos of food is wasted per person in the EU every year. That's equivalent to 660 apples, 132 bags of sugar, or 330 tins of beans in the bin. On World Food Day, we are focusing on reducing food waste. In March, Parliament proposed different ways to cut down on food waste, such as promoting "ugly" fruits and veggies, keeping an eye on unfair market practices, making "best before dates" easier to understand and donating unsold-but-consumable food.
