What an amazing IBEC - Integrated Bioscience & Built Environment Consortium session on detecting and measuring risks from harmful microbes in our buildings! Being my pet area, it was a bit of a fan-girl breakfast, as I listened to the discussion on the topic of "Pioneering Health Through Indoor Air Quality". Thanks to Doctors Erik Malmstrom, Corey Boles, Ph.D., Karen Dannemiller. Krystal Godri Pollitt, William Mills and Alex LeBeau, PhD, MPH, CIH and to Mitesh Kumar for their generous time and knowledge sharing. And to Stephane Bilodeau, Eng. PhD, FEC and Kenneth Martinez for their as ever extraordinary leadership. And all credit to the Firebrand team under Amanda K. Larrinaga for making it all work so well. I took home the messages that: We can detect harmful bioagents in real-time, or near real-time detection but the technology involved is very expensive and not yet a solution to IAQ improvements in buildings, rather being used for detect-to-warn militray applications. Affordable and current methods may not work for all situations - e.g. a new pathogen arrives before cases are identified, or the sensitivity of the method is too low to detect pathogens that are nonetheless harmful. "Fit for purpose" is important when designing monitoring programs or testing - whether we are measuring carbon dioxide, particulate matter, or pressure drops across HVAC filters, we need to take practical steps that lead to implementing successful change, and choose the right metric for a given situation. We can monitor thousands of chemical and microbial agents in buildings, but what matters is how that data is interpreted and used. We should test when the problem is not already obvious (like not testing a wall when it is visibly covered in mould), or when we need to delineate the extent or a spread of a contaminant in air or on surfaces. Not only mould and bacteria, but viruses can accumulate and remain viable in materials and on surfaces especially carpet, and that viruses accumulating in waste water can predict infectious outbreaks a week ahead (lots of new material here for my upcoming AIRAH IAQ conference talk on exploiting reservoirs to assess air quality). Here are the details - link to the recording will be available soon! #webinar #learning #indoorairquality #infectioncontrolandprevention #moldtesting #mould #researchanddevelopment #specialists
