How the automotive industry is making Vorsprung in diversity The automotive industry is traditionally perceived as male-dominated and socially conservative, but some companies are doing surprisingly well in diversity and inclusion. Audi has implemented a robust diversity strategy, outperforming industries typically viewed as more progressive. In its 2023 report, Audi highlights substantial progress in the visibility and empowerment of the LGBTIQ community. The company refers to this progress as "Vorsprung," or advancement, rather than conventional DE&I terminology. Why? Because Audi recognizes the tangible benefits of diversity in achieving greater results in the long run. As the company puts it "Diversity is a marathon, not a sprint".

BMW Criticized For Selective Use Of Pride Logo In Middle East BMW has been criticized for not displaying a rainbow-themed logo on its Middle East social media page during Pride Month, while other regional pages like BMW South Africa and BMW Japan did. The discrepancy led to accusations of inconsistent support for LGBTQ+ rights. An anonymous user on X questioned BMW, asking why the Middle East page did not use the rainbow logo. BMW responded, “This is an established practice at the BMW Group, which also takes into consideration market-specific legal regulations and country-specific cultural aspects.” BMW explained that it allows its sales companies and independent distributors to decide whether to participate in centrally initiated communication and marketing campaigns. Despite the main page’s logo change as a “clear stance” for Pride Month, the company’s explanation did not sit well with everyone. BMW stated, “The international channels can be accessed worldwide and thus show the logo change in all markets worldwide.” The company’s approach received mixed reactions. Some supporters of LGBTQ+ rights felt that BMW’s selective use of the rainbow logo was hypocritical. Ani O’Brien, a prominent user on X, criticized BMW, saying, “As a lesbian, I would prefer you don’t pretend to take a moral stance on my human rights that is dependent on market conditions. Just drop the flag and go sell some cars.” Others also voiced their disapproval, suggesting that BMW’s actions were more about profit than genuine support. Lucy Stone labeled the stance as “opportunistic virtue signaling,” while Adam Carter suggested he would “probably have more respect for BMW if they were just honest and said ‘We see the potential to make more money with a rainbow.'” BMW’s response highlights the difficulties faced by global companies when navigating different cultural and legal environments. The backlash underscores the importance of consistent and sincere support for social causes, particularly when companies choose to take public stances on issues like LGBTQ+ rights.

💡Respect for people. That’s it. That’s the “tweet”. But it also happens to be one of Toyota’s guiding principles, and pillars that have buttressed this innovative company for nearly 100 years. So I’d say it’s more than lip/tweet service. 🏳️🌈 As an ally, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the colorful tapestry of Pride Month unfold at Toyota. Here are my reflections: 🚘 Unity Beyond Differences: Pride Month reminds us that unity transcends political boundaries. Just as Toyota vehicles come in various models, colors, and features, so do people. Our shared humanity binds us together, regardless of our beliefs. 👂🏽Respecting Individual Journeys: Like a well-engineered transmission, acceptance shifts gears smoothly. As an ally, I respect each person’s unique journey. Pride Month encourages us to listen, learn, and appreciate diverse perspectives. 🗺️ Roads Less Traveled: Just as Toyota explores innovative roads in automotive technology, we can explore empathy and understanding. Supporting LGBTQ+ colleagues doesn’t compromise our values; it enriches our workplace and community. 👷🏿♀️Safety and Inclusion: Safety features in our cars protect passengers. Similarly, creating an inclusive environment safeguards everyone. Let’s ensure that our workplaces and communities are safe spaces for all, regardless of sexual orientation or identity. 🌉Driving Forward: Pride Month isn’t about politics; it’s about celebrating love, resilience, and authenticity. 🌈 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗺 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 was a lot of fun! 🎉 For a few hours, I didn’t think about the challenges, the constant judgment, or the pressure to fit into societal expectations. The reality is: 1. In countries like Poland 🇵🇱, Hungary 🇭🇺, and the Czech Republic 🇨🇿, transitioning can be incredibly challenging, and for many, it feels impossible to complete. 2. People in companies often ask about ID 🆔, but many are unaware of how difficult it can be to change it — sometimes it’s even impossible. Let’s walk the talk on diversity and inclusion for real. I had the great pleasure to discuss important questions with the Volvo Group V-EAGLE network for LGBTQAI+ members and allies earlier this week. In a nutshell: 👉 Why should LGBTQAI+ diversity matter in the workplace? - Because everyone should feel safe to come to work as who they are, feel safe at work, respected, and be included. 👉 In 2024, do you think our society has reached full inclusion in the workplace already? - No, unfortunately, in my view more work on this is needed. 👉 What tips can you give to people to become more inclusive colleagues and leaders? - Let’s respect everyone for who they are and include them. It is as simple as that. 👉 LGBTQAI+ people who don’t feel comfortable with being “out” in the workplace, what do you want to say to them? - Sometimes I am sure this can be easier said than done. With full respect for everyone who is not ready, or who does not want to, coming out is a personal choice. But if you want to come out and feel more ready, look for other members and allies – there are many to connect with. And join the LGBTQAI+ community in your workplace, to feel supported but also to support others. I would say that this could be a good starting point. 👉 You have consistently attended the Pride parade in Gothenburg every year since 2017. What was it that made you join the first West Pride parade, and what made you come back every year? - For me as a person, and as a leader, diversity and inclusion really matter. So, when I joined the Volvo Group in 2017, it was very natural for me to also join the West Pride parade in Gothenburg. Since then, many of my colleagues in the Volvo Group Executive Board have joined me. And we can see the number of LGBTQAI+ members and allies in the Group growing every year. This week’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Transport News Brief lead comment, Driving change in the industry Making the automotive industry a more attractive place to work is a key SMMT mission and diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) – improving the sector for every one from every background – is a big part of that. DE&I is proven to improve employee satisfaction, overall business productivity and creativity, so it is important to raise awareness of and celebrate positive change that is happening. That’s why SMMT published its DE&I Toolkit for Businesses (https://lnkd.in/exRbWpuM) and hosts DE&I events each year, this month with the DE&I workshop in London (https://lnkd.in/eh95Cmta) – followed by an LGBTQ+ and Allies workshop in Birmingham (https://lnkd.in/eHSCwVtD), where Queerify will provide expert training on DE&I best practice and advocacy. The workshops are open to all in automotive, not just SMMT members or those who identify as LGBTQ+ – so everyone is encouraged to come and be a changemaker themselves. Working together is so important for DE&I to be a success, and SMMT is very pleased to be partnering with Autocar Drivers of Change (https://lnkd.in/erXmzPg4) which will celebrate the people making DE&I progress happen across the industry – from PR and marketing to manufacturing and operations, vehicle development and purchasing to sales and retail. Today is Trans Day of Visibility #tdov (and also Easter Sunday, happy Easter). My thoughts. For many trans people, they may be the sole representative of their identity amongst their friends, family, and especially colleagues. Societal expectations over gender roles, coupled with the sometimes rough public perception of transgender people, makes the workplace a particularly challenging space if you're trans. The fear of disclosing one's identity, particularly to those in positions of power such as employers, adds a layer of difficulty. Coming out as transgender at work can potentially strain working relationships, throw off team dynamics, or damage career prospects. The same person is seen differently, often under a new level of scrutiny. One can choose friends, but unaccepting colleagues cannot always be avoided. Increased positive representation and public awareness really help in destigmatizing being transgender. However, someone else coming out in the workplace can mark a significant shift from uncertainty to acceptance. It's an unreasonable burden to place on someone, yet being the first to do so can pave the way for profound change. It's risky and terrifying work, pushing the world uphill. My thanks to the trailblazers who live loud and proud, opening doors for those who can't yet step forward alone. You're a beacon in the fog!

A lot of rumblings on our feeds in the last two weeks about the #oscars and the #barbiesnub. The conversation has been lead by the irony of "Ken" getting the nomination over "Barbie," when the entire concept of the film is to challenge the patriarchy, amplify the conversation about gender disparities and challenge stereotypes. We recently had a conversation about inequality at work and if it has affected us. Our experience (recent, at least) was somewhat different to the general vibe we have been hearing elsewhere. Both of us have felt that when in the office, it is an equal playing field. Sure, there has been the odd "boys club" comments, but overall, we have felt respected and acknowledged in our roles as marketers. This could be the industry, as marketing is typically more of a female dominated department, but it did make us wonder - are we a very fortunate minority, or is there a change in the tide? What is your experience? As a woman in business, do you feel as an equal with your peers?
