Winter weather adds a whole new level to #airportoperations! Enjoy this #timelapse of various winter operations tasks being completed at #TheNewT5. Removing snow and ice from an #aircraft that has been sitting at the gate is one such task. Here you can see Austrian Airlines' #B777 being deiced. #Deicing is the process of spraying aircraft with chemicals that help remove the buildup of snow and ice. This is an essential part of the departure process in the winter, since snow and ice can prevent aircraft from generating enough lift to fly! Clearing snow from runways, taxiways, and ramp areas is a constant battle. In the background of this video you can see one of the snow removal teams from the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) - O'Hare & Midway International Airports performing this task. They are removing snow from the taxiways that connect the Terminal 5 ramp to the rest of the airfield.
