A recent study published in the journal Engineering presents a new decision-making and motion-planning framework. It is meant to enhance safety and rational driving in the real world, allowing the #AutonomousVehicle to make decisions while abiding by multiple constraints set by the vehicle's physical limitations. I'm happy to share that a RAND report has been published on the risks from emerging and disruptive transportation technologies. Steven Popper, Hye Min Park, Zara Fatima Abdurahaman, Jalal Awan, Joe Iacobucci, Sydney Maves, Adam Cohen, and I completed the work for The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP). In the report, we review the risks posed by four transportation technologies: #electricvehicles, #autonomousvehicles, #modmaas, and #advancedairmobility. Driving Towards Tomorrow: Smart Highway and the Self-Driving Revolution Cavnue's bold endeavor to create an #autonomous freight corridor outside Austin heralds a future where driverless trucks dominate the highways. Our report on Risks Related to Emerging and Disruptive Transportation Technologies is out! Conventional risk assessments consider the severity and likelihood of an incident occurring. However, when it comes to emerging and disruptive technologies, determining the likelihood of potential risks can be challenging due to the lack of historical data. In our project for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), we developed an agile/adaptive risk management framework to assist transportation agencies, state Departments of Transportation (DOTs), and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) in managing risks associated with the adoption of emerging and disruptive transportation technologies. We also used this framework to develop a risk register for four transportation technologies: Electric Vehicles, Connected Autonomous Vehicles, Mobility on Demand (MoD)/Mobility as a Service (MaaS), and Advanced Air Mobility. #EVs #emergingtechnologies #advancedairmobility #modmaas #transportationtechnologies #NCHRP #TRB #RAND

Key insights from the simulator study with 17 motorists: ✅ Improved Focus: Passengers help drivers stay more attentive to the road. ✅ Better Decision-Making: Passengers assist in recognizing when manual control is necessary. ✅ Direction Assistance: Passengers provide valuable navigation help. ✅ Preventing Drowsiness: Having someone in the front seat helps keep drivers awake. ✅ However, it's not all smooth sailing. The study also found that passengers can create distractions during automated periods, making the transition back to manual control challenging. This research sheds light on the complex dynamics of driver-passenger interaction in Level 3 automated vehicles and underscores the importance of developing systems that balance these benefits and drawbacks.
