I created 502 Black Business Week and Black Eats Week to uplift and celebrate Black businesses, but also to remind us of a painful truth—this country has a long history of trying to deny Black prosperity. 116 years ago in August, in 1908, Springfield, Illinois, was the site of a brutal race riot that many don’t even know about. Angry mobs attacked Black neighborhoods, burning homes and businesses to the ground, and killing people simply because they were Black. This violence wasn’t just about hate—it was about trying to erase the progress Black people had made, to destroy any chance of us thriving economically. Events like this, and the destruction of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, show us that our success has always been met with resistance. But despite that, we continue to build, create, and succeed. 502 Black Business Week and Black Eats Week are about honoring that resilience, remembering the struggles our ancestors faced, and ensuring that our businesses today are supported and celebrated. This is our way of saying that no matter what, we will continue to rise. Don't forget it's still #nationalblackbusinessmonth #502BlackBusinessWeek #BlackEatsWeek #SupportBlackBusinesses #BlackHistoryMatters

Proud moment ♥️ There is a lot of commentary in this industry about the lack of Black History Month strategy and campaigns as it relates to brands and businesses. Most creators have noted that this year, they have seen a stark contrast between this year and previous years. Not only have we not received BHM campaigns, but many of us have also not seen brands even discussing it on their feeds. The black squares and solidarity seem to be over. Nevertheless, we persevere. This year, I took it upon myself to start a non-sponsored series highlighting black owned businesses/ restaurants in Las Vegas. 1. Because I know what I have to say is valuable. 2. Using my talents and skills to lift community and businesses up prove to be life changing for small businesses. These are the stats from my first video of the series on black owned restaurants in Las Vegas. We’ve proceeded to create 4 more in the same category and the stats all look this way. To creators: Stop waiting for brands to do amazing things! I know we need the money but non-sponsored posts are where you have the most power and creativity. Brands: Please rethink power and influence. Like Gabby Beckford ✈️ says we’re building our own table! New for April: Introducing the Ungift Box! Are you tired of always being the one to give gifts and never receiving them? It's time to treat yourself to something special too! With our innovative Ungift Box, you can turn the tables and receive a surprise gift from your loved ones. How it works: You send an Ungift Box to someone special, but instead of filling it with a traditional gift, you leave it empty, inviting them to fill it with something they think you'll love. It's a unique way to encourage your friends and family to show their appreciation for you all while supporting local Black owned brands. Imagine the joy of receiving a warm invitation and reminder to send someone a thoughtful gift. It's time to celebrate the joy of receiving gifts as much as giving them. Order your Ungift Box today and let the giving-and-receiving adventure begin! 🙃🤣🤭

During August, we urge everyone to prioritize supporting Black-owned and operated businesses! This can look like: ✅ Going out to eat at a Black-owned restaurant ✅ Browsing the internet for prints from Black artists ✅ Reading a book about Black history written by a Black author #blackbusinessmonth #blackownedbusiness #taos #thearmyofsurvivors

“Who can benefit? Everyone. Who needs to go? Everyone. This topic is not Black and white. It’s a “we” thing. This is OUR industry. OUR world. This is young and old, creative and account, client and agency – all sides of the table.” Gabrielle Shirdan shares when asked, “Who can benefit most from attending Blackweek? Who needs to go?” in this week's 7 for 7 series on LBBonline - Little Black Book. https://lnkd.in/ekFCyYF9

Founder of Cultivate | Networking Community for Female Entrepreneurs & Business Women | Where Women Thrive CultivateBg.com
Y’all know her as the poet, the author, the voice of a generation. But did you know Maya Angelou, the phenomenal woman, was also an entrepreneur? This Black History Month, let’s shine a light on the lesser-known side of Ms. Angelou, the hustler, the go-getter, the woman who paved the way for Black creatives everywhere. From dancer to actress, singer to playwright, Angelou never shied away from new ventures. She self-published her first book, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” after facing rejections, proving that resilience and belief in her own voice were her superpowers. She toured tirelessly, not just captivating audiences with her words, but building her own brand - the brand of Maya Angelou. And let’s not forget her restaurant, “Caged Bird,” a space where art, community, and good food collided. ️ Ms. Angelou’s entrepreneurial spirit wasn’t just about making money; it was about creating spaces for Black expression, ownership, and self-determination. She showed us that our stories, our voices, our talents have commercial value, and that there’s no shame in turning them into businesses. ✨ So, this Black History Month, let’s honor Maya Angelou not just for her words, but for her hustle.Let’s remember that we, too, can be the owners of our narratives, the architects of our dreams. Let her story be a beacon, reminding us that with courage, creativity, and a little bit of audacity, we can all build our own empires. #BlackHistoryMonth #MayaAngelou #BlackExcellence #EntrepreneurLife #OwnYourStory #cultivatebg #community #bowlinggreenky

Founding CEO of Green Heffa Farms (Certified B Corp) | Award-Winning Fundraiser Turned Herb Farmer & Tea Blender | Visionary Environmentalist & Diversity Advocate | Global Speaker & Educator
A fellow Black woman farmer I have worked with (some would say mentored but I am careful about power dynamics) for over a year in my private learning community, The Sow Green Society, has launched her first artisanal offering, Saffron Sugar, made from saffron she actually grows. Sierra Saffron and Herb Co., headed by Farmer Oriana Bolden, organically grows herbs and other speciality crops to create handcrafted treasures, from artisanal sugars that spark the imagination to carefully curated herb blends that add a dash of inspiration to every dish. Her Saffron Sugar is her signature product and I am thrilled to pair it with my farm's bestselling RICH AUNTEA. Green Heffa Farms' RICH AUNTEA herbal tea blend is a rich purple brew made from organically grown lemongrass, hibiscus, and butterfly pea flower. This bundle is the epitome of herbal richness, luxury, and sophistication and is giving very much UPPITEA. The fact that this launch is happening at the same time that my most favoritest and bestest movie ever, The Color Purple, has been reimagined into another cinematic masterpiece is simply divine. There is something magical about sipping your organically and regeneratively grown herbs tea sweetened with the world's most expensive spice, all made possible by Black women farmers who respect the land and want to make the world a bit sweeter and sufficiently herbed up while increasing the planet's population of joyous people. How rich. I sent out an email with the video below to my email list and they have responded in the way that my email list always done. Many are now following Sierra Saffron on social media and hopefully, some will become customers. Love me a good full circle made possible through an energetically aligned community. This wasn't a sales pitch but if interested in getting on of these bundles for yourself, let me know down below in the comments. I only have a few left because the Green Heffa Farms' email list does not play. And everyone can drop a lesson that you have learned in 2023 that you would like to share with others. Just might help someone. I'll go first. 2023 taught me that I only seek to attract the amount of resources I can responsibly steward without becoming spiritually raggedy. Y'all be safe out here. See you next year.
