Overfishing and the absence of regulated replenishment zones have contributed to the declining populations of aquatic species in Belize. This can devastate marine life and threaten the livelihoods of those dependent on it. Today, for World Oceans Day, we're reminded of the importance of encouraging these fishing communities to implement sustainable fishing practices. Our radio show, Punta Fuego, was developed in partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society Belize and the Belize Fisheries Department, to engage fishing communities through compelling narratives and create behavioral changes to protect marine wildlife. The series follows the epic adventures of a young fisherman engaging the Belizean fishing communities in sustainable practices. Through it, fishing communities engaged in compelling narratives and adopting behavioral changes to protect marine wildlife. #Fishing #SustainablePractices #Biodiversity #ReplenishmentZones #SustainableFoodSystems #BuildingCapacity

Oceanic whitetip sharks are distinguishable by the white patches on the tips of their fins. They were once abundant across the globe. However, these distinctive sharks have declined dramatically in recent decades, and are now listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The most significant threat to oceanic whitetip sharks is bycatch-related mortality, as well as illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. #ConservationTuesday

🌍 Water Aeration for Conservation. 🐟 Water aeration in lakes, ponds, and fisheries plays a pivotal role in supporting wildlife conservation by creating an environment conducive to the well-being of fish and aquatic species. ISS Flowthrough aeration systems introduce oxygen into the water, mitigating the risk of low dissolved oxygen levels that can be detrimental to fish populations. Adequate oxygenation promotes the health, growth, and reproduction of various fish species, contributing directly to their conservation. Additionally, aeration aids in controlling nutrient levels and curbing the growth of harmful algae, preserving water quality and creating a sustainable habitat for a diverse array of wildlife. ISS Flowthrough water aeration emerges as a crucial tool in the broader conservation effort, safeguarding the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems and ensuring the continued existence of diverse aquatic species. #wildlifeconservation #wateraeration #aquatichabitats #fishconservation #bluegreenalgae #waterquality #algaecontrol #conservationefforts #preservenature #lakes #ponds #fisheries

Today is Endangered Species Day and we want to spotlight the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus)! 🦈 Basking sharks were once abundant off the coasts of BC, but their populations were diminished as a result of commercial fishing and an intensive and successful government eradication program. Basking sharks were officially classified as ‘endangered’ in 2007 by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and in February 2010 the population was listed as ‘endangered’ under Canada’s Species at Risk Act (SARA), affording it legal protection. According to the Fisheries and Oceans Canada recovery plan for the species, only 37 basking sharks were spotted in B.C. waters between 1996 and 2018. There is a hope that this population of will recover and may once again be abundant off the coast. 🌟 Lighting the way to sea turtle conservation 🐢 Did you know that accidental capture—or bycatch—by fisheries is a leading cause of sea turtle mortality? In El Salvador, the issue hits close to home for #hawksbills in lobster fishery areas. Our partner ProCosta and lobster fishers have been tackling this problem for the past decade. One of their most effective strategies is attaching LED lights to lobster fishing nets. ProCosta has trialed this technology over 9,000 times with promising results. LED lights reduce hawksbill bycatch by nearly 60% and increase lobster catch by 10%. Learn more in our latest blog: https://loom.ly/kB-7QwQ 📸: Fishing net with LED lights by Carlos Rivas

Human-wildlife conflict. Conflicts between people and wild animals occur when the action of one has a negative effect on the other. Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) refers to the interactions between humans and wildlife that result in negative impacts on both humans and animals. It occurs when human activities and wildlife needs overlap, leading to conflicts over resources, space, and safety. From a conservationist perspective, conflicts pose a threat to numerous species, and so there is a need for actions and methods to mitigate them for the benefit of both parties involved. Understanding HWC is crucial for effective conservation and management: 🐍 Habitat encroachment: Human settlements and agriculture expand into wildlife habitats, leading to conflicts. 🐍 Resource competition: Humans and wildlife compete for resources like water, food, and space. 🐍 Crop damage and livestock depredation: Wildlife damages crops and kills livestock, affecting human livelihoods. 🐍 Human safety concerns: Wildlife attacks on humans, especially by predators like bears and big cats. 🐍 Property damage: Wildlife damages property, like homes and fences. 🐍 Disease transmission: Wildlife can transmit diseases to humans and livestock. 🐍 Cultural and social impacts: HWC affects human cultural practices and social structures. 🐍 Economic impacts: HWC affects human livelihoods, agriculture, and tourism. Addressing Human-Wildlife Conflict requires a multi-faceted approach that balances human needs and wildlife conservation, and involves stakeholders from local communities, governments, NGOs, and international organisations. #HWC #wildlifeconservation #wildlifeandrangemanagement #proudforester #Day4ofconsistencywithtechsisi.

A new large-scale survey of 7K citizens from 🇩🇰🇩🇪🇮🇪🇵🇹🇪🇸🇸🇪🇳🇱 sheds light on public opinion on #ocean conservation policies. 🐬🐠 The message is clear, Marine Protected Areas should be havens for #MarineLife, not trawling grounds. 🐬🦀 Bottom trawling is a fishing method that involves one or more boats pulling heavy fishing nets along the ocean floor in an effort to catch fish and other marine species. It is one of the most destructive and indiscriminate fishing methods, resulting in ecosystem loss, the release of carbon stored in the seabed, and high levels of bycatch and fish discards. 86% citizens surveyed for the research support stricter protection in Marine Protected Areas. While 77% support a ban on #BottomTrawling in #MarineProtectedAreas. 👉Find the IWT Press Release here: https://lnkd.in/ewneHBpD #EuBiodiversity #OceanDeal #banbottomtrawling #marineprotection

Marine Review highlights bait ball feeding frenzies and devastation of UK seabirds The Wildlife Trusts’ annual round-up of life in UK seas presents the highs and lows for 2023, including bait ball feeding frenzies and increased sightings of Atlantic bluefin tuna alongside the devastating impact of avian flu on seabirds. Dr Lissa Batey, head of marine conservation at The Wildlife Trusts, said: “2023 has been a historic year for marine conservation with the creation of the first Highly Protected Marine Areas in English waters. This new gold-standard of protection will stop all damaging activities such as trawling and enables marine wildlife to recover, benefiting fishers and carbon storing habitats. “The end of commercial whaling has brought humpbacks and fin whales back to UK waters, and measures to protect bluefin tuna has led to a spike in sightings. This fantastic fish has returned from the brink of extinction and the risk of decimating the population for a second time remains high – so it is vital that commercial fishing quotas are set realistically and rigorously enforced. When we give nature space, wildlife can recover – it’s as simple as that. We must act faster to protect the UK target of 30% of seas by 2030.” You can read more about the Marine Review here: https://lnkd.in/eNb7gMPX #MarineConservation #MarineScience #Conservation #BirdFlu #BluefinTuna #Seabirds #BaskingSharks #Whales #Dolphins #NatureRestoration #HPMAs

An Important Thing to Know::::::
On International Save the Vaquita Day, we want to highlight the importance of this astounding species and how you can support SAFE Vaquita 🐬 The vaquita is the world’s most endangered marine mammal, threatened by entanglement in gill nets which are used to capture Totoaba for sale of its bladder in the illegal wildlife trade. The International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita, of which SAFE is a part, is a team of #Scientists established by the government of Mexico. In 2019, combined efforts that support vaquita #Conservation removed and destroyed over 1,720 gill nets from the Vaquita Refuge in the Upper Gulf of California and almost 1,400 pieces of illegal fishing gear. The solution to vaquita #Recovery is more complex than removing gill nets and illegal fishing gear. To be successful, all stakeholders must work in concert to ensure coexistence between people, wildlife, and ecosystems, and only then will the species of the Upper Gulf, and the #Vaquita, thrive. 🌎 In January 2020, SAFE vaquita was awarded funding from AZA’s SAFE Granting Program to conduct a series of workshops to promote information exchange with the fishermen and law enforcement in San Felipe, Mexico, in hopes that open dialogue will further the creation of #Sustainable fisheries in the Upper Gulf. Learn more about what can be done for the Vaquita: https://bit.ly/3A1Zbxw #SAFE #SAFEVaquita #MarineMammal #EndangeredSpecies #Sustainability #Entanglement #IllegalWildlifeTrade #CIRVA
