We achieved non-profit status in January of 2023 and haven’t stopped expanding! Our dedicated and passionate team currently supports over 30 participants with disabilities and acquired brain injuries in their homes and communities. What sets us apart from other DD waiver providers is our commitment to inclusivity and challenging barriers. Most providers require participants to pay for all employee costs for outings to see their favorite artists, sports teams, and vacation spots. This makes these kinds of memories financially impossible for many participants. We work diligently to keep organizational costs to a minimum in order to cover employee costs. There is no greater feeling than seeing the joy in someone’s face as they participate in creating the life they have imagined!

What a super few days spending time with some of the amazing team at Helping People Achieve! HPA is a long-term provider of disability support services and supported employment within the Darwin Region since 1963. The amazing team provide support to people living with a disability through delivering outreach services, providing affordable accommodation and creating job opportunities through supported employment. I was very fortunate to meet with a number of the team this week to better understand their roles and how they contribute to the wellbeing of HPA participants. Sonor Foundation delivers funds through impact challenges, and the next 3 years of funding will be based on this Impact Challenge. Does your organization work with kin communities engaged with the child institutionalization system, systemically known as the Child Welfare system? Do you have a program idea that would enable young people in the system to connect with kin to build strong and empowering relationships? Kinship caregivers are the least supported caregiver population with little resources compared to adoptive parents, foster parents, etc. This area is an important gap that impacts young people. We all know someone who relies on social care to live in dignity, to make life choices, or to live safely in their own home, in a care home, or in the community. That might be a parent or a grandparent with dementia, a child or a sibling with a learning disability, or a friend with a mental health issue. By the time we are of pension age, half of us will be disabled. We will all need social care at some point, either for ourselves or for a loved one. If done well, social care can change lives for the better. But every day millions of older and disabled people are denied the social care they need and have a right to. Paid and unpaid Caregivers are partners in making it possible for people with disabilities to live independently. Without attendants and caregivers, many people with disabilities would not be able to live, travel, and participate in work and community independently. In November, CIL launched the BETA version of a highly anticipated Care Provider Matching Registry, which bridges the gap between personal attendants and care recipients. In early December, we announced the launch of free, online, self-paced caregiver courses that are designed to equip caregivers with time-saving strategies, meaningful insights, and the chance to earn financial incentives. Another essential component of our Caregiver work is advocating for better support, pay/benefits, protections, and rights for paid and unpaid caregivers.
