💪🏻#STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID💪🏻 Aka #SCM The SCM is a #muscle that runs bilaterally from the top of the breast bone and collarbones to behind the ears and is very close to the surface so it is easily visible and palpable. 📍MOVEMENT📍 #Unilateral contraction of the SCM causes the neck to side bend to the same side and rotate the head to the opposite side while a #bilateral contraction lifts the head up and tucking the chin towards the chest. When the head is fixed, it elevates the breastbone and collarbone to expand the #thoracic cavity (inspiratory breathing muscle). 📍CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE📍 #Wryneck where the head bends towards the affected muscle and rotates to the unaffected/healthy side which can cause a #torticollis where there is a #spasm of the SCM. #ForwardHeadCarriage can cause #hypertonicity of the SCM (and other muscles in the surrounding area) due to the prolonged #contraction of the muscle which over time can interfere with the #neurovascular bundle that runs through the area. 🤔 CAN UNEVEN HIPS BE FIXED BY PHYSICAL THERAPY? This is a topic that does not get enough attention and the results of having uneven hips is detrimental to a persons overall wellbeing. Starting with a standing X-ray how much do you consider to be normal when you are looking for levelness of the iliac crests? 1. Should they be perfectly level? 2. If they are within 5 mm of each that is considered normal? 3. It doesn't matter the iliac crest height, whatever the patient presents is normal? This is my professional chiropractic opinion about this, and if others feel different please comment because The patients I see getting knee and hip replacements are all to often the result of uneven hips. My opinion is that if the iliac crests are more than 5mm off from the other, I consider that abnormal and a heel lift should be used on the low side. Pretty simple and straight forward, no other tests need to be run. If you find the crests to be 10mm or more than my goal for the patient is to get them as close as possible to the 5mm. I had a patient that was 1.5 inches off and the heel lift would put the patient out of his shoe. Obviously that won't work so we moved to a sole lift. I'd like to hear others and how they treat this finding.
