I am in kennel DD41. https://lnkd.in/gdVK-BWS Heartworm Status: NEGATIVE SHELTER NOTES 02/23/24 12:48 Standing at front of kennel with wagging tail but once kennel door was opened was cowering, tail tucked while leashing. Once leashed walked out with tail down and scurrying walk. Quiet in runs, walking around, sniffing other dogs and sitting around. Back inside kennel was snarling, lunging and forward barking when I and other staff passed by; other times he stood on all fours with wagging tail quietly. A couple times I would pass, and he was lunging then a couple minutes later pass again and he stood wagging tail. There was not anything consistent about what he was barking or calm towards (e.g. walking other dogs or direction I was walking from or holding anything in my hands) and he received treats every time I passed. Behavior unpredictable. Leashed for PM walk, he was cowering as I placed leash on him but once it was on walked with high flag tail, alternating between stiff wagging and loose wagging, fast walk next to me. Sat at back of run watching cars driving by on the grass. When I entered kennel he scurried in wide circle around me, ears back, whale eyes and lip licking. I sat on the bench, and he circled back towards me, climbed up onto the bench next to me. I leashed and he walked with wagging flag tail inside. Once back inside kennel, was forward barking, but this time able to redirect him with kibble soaked in chicken broth. Please contact BARC if you can help! Last month, my husband Shayan Monajem Fatheazam decided to install a trail camera in our backyard, capturing footage of a chubby bear crossing through our yard on the night of November 23rd. Our immediate response was to contact the bear hotline to report the sighting and share the information on a social media platform for neighborhoods. Soon after posting, I was surprised by negative comments like "don't report, leave the bears alone" or "they will kill the bear if you call them." It was frustrating because people seemed uninterested in the information I was bringing from wildlife safety organizations. At that moment, I wasn't inclined to engage with those who weren't open to absorbing the crucial wildlife safety information. My primary goal was to stress the importance of reporting bear sightings, as it aids in tracking bear activities in our community. Authorities use this data to place signage, alerting everyone about the presence of these amazing animals while ensuring that the bears are not harmed when peacefully feeding and pose no danger to humans and pets. In the following days, on November 28th and December 1st, the bear returned close to our bedroom window (It's astonishing how silent this big guy is!), we only noticed its presence because of the camera images. On these occasions, we decided only to report the sightings to the Conservation Officer Service again. While feeling a little guilt for not sharing my new sightings with a broader audience on the neighborhood app, I was also troubled, thinking of other ways I could help bring more information to the families living in bear country and ensure everyone can stay safe around wildlife, especially now that they are eating A LOT and will soon find a good spot and head into their den. ⭐ With that in mind, I'm pleased to share that I've reached out to the North Shore Black Bear Society to become a helping hand on their volunteer team. My aim is to assist this non-profit organization in finding ways to enhance their community outreach through communication. The next steps involve not only studying NSBBS strategies for community awareness but also digging deeper to learn more about these incredible creatures we have the privilege to coexist with! 🐻💡And if you've kept reading this post until this point, let me share a very interesting fact that was shared with me by the organization when I first reported bear activity: "The fact that this bear is still roaming around and hasn't entered its den yet indicates that it is still looking for calories. At this time of year, bears are feeding intensively (up to 20 hours per day and up to 20,000 calories) to put enough body fat on to last through the winter months. Bears will go without eating or drinking for up to 4 months and can lose 30% of their body weight during this time."
