This is an excellent, real-life example of what sets SAM apart! The unified and holistic approach to a wide range of challenges across various infrastructure industries.
The Lake of the Ozarks is one of Missouri's crown jewels. Created with the construction of the Bagnell Dam in 1931, this 54,000-acre lake is a vital resource for central Missouri's residents. It provides power to over 40,000 households and is a huge hub for recreation and community. SAM is proud to be a committed partner in the lake's management and continued success, with a relationship lasting over 24 years and counting. During this time, SAM has developed the Shoreline Management System, an extensive GIS platform that combines spatial datasets, digital maps, permitting, and other key initiatives to improve the lake. This is only possible with the holistic, comprehensive offerings of the MGS™ Solutions ecosystem, which utilizes an exhaustive portfolio of experience to curate custom strategies for client success and efficiency. The ways to get solid information about what’s going on in land use — truly transformational. Hope you can find 20 minutes to give a listen
Technological advances in satellite imagery and data management have boosted the field of geospatial mapping, making it possible to show all kinds of land uses across parcels, blocks, neighborhoods, and even countries. In our newest episode of the Land Matters podcast with Anthony Flint, Jeffrey Allenby, GISP at our Center for Geospatial Solutions explains how the tools are helping local decision-makers understand property ownership patterns and the potential for much-needed new housing. We brought out the big guns for this one. 💪 Last month Topology's Christopher Colley and William Kurzenberger were invited to speak at the New Jersey Redevelopment Authority workshop "Exploring Effective Models and Strategies for Land Reuse" at Thomas Edison State University. 👨🏫 They offered lessons learned in their work redeveloping challenging sites and discussed some case studies to help the audience understand how to apply those lessons to their own redevelopment challenges. 🏗 "Sharing capital ideas in the State capitol" as Will so aptly put it. #njredevelopment #njdevelopment #redevelopmentplanning #njplanners #njplanningfirm

If you know anyone w/ expertise on this kind of work, please spread the word! Proposals due 8/16/24, questions due 7/10/24. The Pew Charitable Trusts is seeking proposals from organizations to provide a policy and design assessment that identifies recommendations and opportunities for maximizing co-benefits that properly designed stream crossings (e.g., bridges and culverts) may provide for addressing: (1) hydrologic-related climate change impacts and (2) aquatic and terrestrial species movement. The assessment will address how/whether stream crossings currently consider hydrograph variation, fish passage, and terrestrial species passage together. The results will inform and support potential changes to 2026 Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act as well as state-based policy reforms to incorporate multiple benefits into the design of stream crossing. Contact: Chip Heil (StreamCrossing@pewtrusts.org) Key dates: Deadline for questions: July 10, 2024 Deadline for proposals: August 16, 2024 Downloads: RFP (PDF): https://lnkd.in/ebRN_dpR Price Proposal Template (XLSX): https://lnkd.in/eRkn-xqG Respondent Summary Form (DOCX): https://lnkd.in/eyJzjTPG Vendor Data Notification (PDF): https://lnkd.in/e5cHKyDU

Any time I get overwhelmed at the Herculean tasks that might be in front of me, I just think back to Chief Engineer William Gooding. Gooding was tasked with building a 96-mile canal through muddy, rocky, swampy, and insect-infested terrain to connect Lake Michigan to the Illinois River and thus provide an all-water route from the East Coast to the Gulf of Mexico. He was beset by economic crises, labor shortages, the near bankruptcy of the state of Illinois and meddling politicians. Yet, he persisted. And, after 12 years, he was able to open the I&M Canal in April 1848, (hence the reason we've been celebrating the 175th Opening of the Canal over the last year). As a result, the Midwest exploded and Chicago grew into a booming metropolis. Read (or listen to!) the story on our Substack: https://lnkd.in/g4kS7bhQ 📸 @trails774 **** Unfamiliar with Substack? Here are some tips: 1) Click the link above. The landing page may ask you if you would like to subscribe. Please do! Finding my passion came to me serendipitously. Writing an article about the rehabbing of a historic building, the owner of the building pointed out the economic and ecological benefits of historic preservation. An underused building, that once had three lackluster businesses in it now housed a vibrant art gallery, a gym and luxury apartments. Where there once had been three water/electric meters, the building now had six. At the very minimum, he said, the city was selling twice as much water and electricity. It was as if a light had gone off over my head - a way to boost the economy, keep materials out of landfills, and serve the community. Since then, I've written many articles about historic buildings, and each one brings together my drive to learn about things no one else seems to know. I've researched buildings that were once funeral homes, warehouses, log cabins, and movie theaters. That research led to my 2021 Arcadia Press book, Historic Movie Theaters of Columbia. That book and my drive to help preserve historic buildings and the history they envelop led me to help found the nonprofit CoMo Preservation in 2022. I held the position of president until 2024, when I stepped down to return to my true passion - creating content. My current research focus is gas stations, developing content on how to do local historical research, and working with Nina Sappington to create a list of library resources on historic preservation and content for CoMo Preservation. Here's a link to information from Alley A's website about the first building I wrote about. https://lnkd.in/g4MHNvWU
