The human brain has capacity to see what it wants, and ignore the rest, (Confirmation bias). Our brains are under increasing pressure to do better in an increasingly complex world, full of bells, whistles, pings, dings and reminders from yet more systems and apps. These forms of sensory stimulus are a source of stress for many brains. We ignore the negative neurological impact in the pursuit of efficiency, under the guise of 'Making things easier' ... (ignoring the facts which explain 'Easier' for 'Brain'). The assumptions we make with such loose language, are working to our detriment on a global scale. Perhaps this gives us another take on the old saying 'Loose lips, sink ships' ... rather than spilling secrets, maybe it's about using familiar language to kid ourselves, when we're doing more harm than good? How people FEEL is brain function. Period. If we're not talking in terms of brain, as root cause of the decisions and actions that create the socio-technical conditions people survive daily, which demand neurological and emotional reactions to stimuli (the essence of Mental Health / Wellbeing), how can we expect leaders to understand what action to take or what beliefs and biases to challenge in themselves? Let's posit a situation: An ERP system imposes control that causes frustration 37 times a day, due to the nature of it's design. This system requires a multitude of work-arounds to get the job done, increasing cognitive load on working memory and stress. The rationale. The business can't afford the next 7 module licenses that would be required to plug the gap left by the original spec and budget. Millions were spent over years and for many, the pain of that implementation program seems to have made things worse. This is reality for millions of people, right now! If that's just one aspect of daily life in the 4-walls of a factory, compounding the stress of machinery going wrong, demanding customers, supplier issues, project deadlines and an expectation to continuously improve ... a small superficial gesture to say thanks for putting up with the stress or a health plan that includes counselling to teach you breathing techniques, simply isn't going to improve wellbeing or the culture of the company! But when asked, "do you have a wellbeing policy?", the box will be ticked. We talk about root cause analysis for engineering issues and we're good at it ... isn't it time we did the same for people and their brain? Do we need to stop talking in broad terms like 'easier' and mental health and start talking brain function, so we understand cause and effect more clearly? 1. Socio-technical environment provides sensory stimulus 2. Brain reacts to survive environment, fear / fight-flight = stress (elevated cortisol levels) 3. Disengagement and wellbeing stats get worse / performance drops 4. Add more sensory stimulus to the environment Does this seem sensible to you? 🤔

Mental Health in companies is really important. Making sure we look after all our staff is the least we can do. Everyone can do their bit to look out for others, this could be anyone in your company from your staff to the senior management team. If you work with someone everyday you may notice a change, in some cases you won't. Keep the environment open and approachable, let everyone have their say and listen. Give them the time they need to talk to you. #mentalhealthmatters
