All of those trips to Michael’s and Joann’s are going to pay off! July 21st is National Craft for Your Local Shelters Day and invites crafty and creative people to participate. These shelters are none other than animal shelters, usually those for dogs and cats. The summertime is the busiest for shelters, as they’re getting many animals in due to owners surrendering them and Kitten Season. Despite having kind people watching over them in the shelters, those are not the homiest of places for our furry friends. Making toys or any kind of supplies that can be used can help greatly not just for their care but for their overall mood. Animals can also help us in return by reducing stress and anxiety. It’s been shown that pets help with cardiovascular health as well as improve one’s active state of living. These benefits can keep a person from feelings of loneliness and isolation which can lead them to paths filled with people who can take advantage of that. Yay! It's National Make a Dog's Day! 🐶 🦴 If you are like me and have furry office mates, give them an extra treat, a belly rub, or a longer walk. 💡 The ability to work from home isn't just great for humans. More than 23 million American households — nearly 1 in 5 nationwide — adopted a pet during the pandemic, according to the @ASPCA. 🐺 Those animals are not used to being left alone. Many developed behavior problems associated with separation anxiety, when workers were required to return to the office. Since then millions of animals have been surrendered to shelters. The majority of no-kill shelters have been at capacity since late 2022, with no end in sight. 💡 So, if you are in a position to do so, consider making a dog's day by volunteering at your local animal shelter. 💡 Or save a dog's life by adopting a new fuzzy friend, like my sidekick Jackie! #remotework

My today’s thought: It's really important to instill a sense of empathy towards animals in children, whether they are street animals or pets. Teaching kids to be kind and compassionate towards animals not only helps the animals but also fosters empathy and respect in children. How to cultivate empathy in children? • Encouraging children to observe and understand animals' behaviors, needs, and emotions. This can help them develop a deeper connection and appreciation for all living creatures. • Involve your children in activities like volunteering at animal shelters, feeding stray animals, or simply caring for a pet can also nurture their empathy and sense of responsibility towards animals. By teaching children to treat animals with kindness and respect, we not only help create a more compassionate society but also instill valuable life lessons in our children. What's up with dogs in shelters right now? We're glad you asked. 🧐 January through July of 2023, 87% of dogs had a live outcome (adoption, transferral, returned to owner, etc.), while 11% had a non-live outcome (euthanized, lost or died in care, etc.). The remaining 2% gap represents animals still waiting for an outcome — in this case, thousands upon thousands of canines. Data in our Q2 report showed that live outcomes for dogs are likely to remain stagnant for the rest of the year. What is your organization doing to increase outcomes amid this crisis?
