Yes, Cari Bode and I have a fierce (but friendly) rivalry to see which Board member can sign up the most people for the Queen City Marathon. A good portion of this rivalry stems from a shared idea—if one says the word "Boston" to a runner, their mind will instantly add the word "Marathon." They envision a massive event in which an entire city and region participates. The event is televised and played in every bar and cafe, and the streets are lined with spectators going back several rows. I have seen it described as a physical and psychological landmark, packed with a level of lore comparable to climbing Mount Everest. Just imagine the excitement and economic spinoff. Cari and I would like to see that happen when someone says "Queen City" or "Regina." We need runners and volunteers (and longer-term sponsors) to make that happen. If you think that is an excellent idea, do your part to register as a runner or volunteer. It's also an inclusive event; you don't need to be fast. You can walk as much as you need to. The promo code ED10 will give you a 10% discount on registration fees. https://lnkd.in/gYEqKzny
It’s a little over a month until Queen City Marathon and if you’d like to register as a runner the promo code ED10 will get you a bit of a discount. Here’s a few other interesting tidbits: - Queen City Marathon generates a lot of foot traffic. The event will draw over 5000 runners and walkers this year. - Queen City Marathon generates over $2M in economic activity to the local economy. - Over 500 volunteers put in more than 2500 volunteer hours to make Queen City Marathon happen. If you want to get involved as a volunteer there is still time. Head over to https://runqcm.ca to find out more. #yqr #seeyqr #runregina #qcm2024

The greatest in the game descend upon Pinehurst No. 2 this week at the #USOpen. Pinehurst is a small town with very little infrastructure to support an event like this that is expected to draw in about 65,000 people. As a result, the United States Golf Association (USGA) is partnering with Amtrak to offer attendees a train ride for Raleigh directly to the course. All aboard the "Open Express"! Fan travel, which is considered to be a scope 3 GHG emissions source, meaning the tournament doesn’t directly produce it, is often the single largest source of GHG emissions for golf tournaments. We love to see the USGA implementing innovative partnerships like this one with Amtrak to help decrease the impact on the local community and reduce GHG emissions! More tournaments should prioritize decreasing fan travel emissions and look to public transportation providers to support these efforts. #golf #sustainability #sustainabledevelopment #sustainablegolf #masstransportation #sustainabletransportation #energyefficiency

As I stated in a previous post where Greg Norman won £70,000 for his victory at Trump Turnberry in The Open 1986 - The winners checks should return to a normal level so the The R&A can spend more globally promoting the game as they are charged to do - same goes for the United States Golf Association (USGA) & PGAs. It is not any way in their remit to pay pros generational wealth in a single check. I keep hearing the from the pros themselves that they are playing for legacy and trophies not money - The for profits (PGA TOUR, DP World Tour, Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA)) & others that self-fund (LIV Golf, Masters) may increase the purses as much as they like and sponsors will support - but the organizations that grow the game from grass roots support so that the leaderboards are full of flags from around the world should have the support of the professionals to cap the purses - The prestige of the Major shouldn't be contingent of the amount of the winners check. As Martin Slumbers bravely brought attention to the fact the escalation of purses on Golf's most important organizations is unsustainable. In addition, a reduction in the overall men's purse would, like tennis, hopefully allow equal men's and women's payouts in the majors hosted by those organizations as they support both. The Open is the greatest legacy major and doesn't need the largest purse to prove it. #growthegame Augusta National Golf Club #TheMasters PGA of America The PGA The Golf Business
The winner of The 152nd Open at Royal Troon will receive USD 3.1 million in prize money. The Champion Golfer of the Year will receive the highest amount in The Open’s history as it returns to the renowned Ayrshire links for the tenth time. The R&A announced that the total prize fund for The Open, played from 14-21 July 2024, will be USD 17 million, a USD 500,000 increase on 2023. Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A, said, “The R&A has a responsibility to strike a balance between maintaining The Open’s position in the global game, providing the funds required for governance and developing amateur and recreational golf in 146 countries internationally. “We have to make choices if we want to continue to build on the significant growth in participation that is essential for golf’s future. “We remain concerned about the impact substantial increases in men’s professional prize money are having on the perception of the sport and its long-term financial sustainability. We are determined to act with the interests of the global game in mind as we pursue our goal of ensuring golf continues to thrive in 50 years’ time.”

Automatic Knowledge Ltd, geographic data analyst, former Professor of Urban Studies and Planning - happy to connect
This work combines professional and personal interests, going back many years, and we now have what I believe is the most comprehensive golf course database in the country, as well as a separate club membership dataset with thousands of data points #golf #planning #data
We have conducted an in-depth statistical analysis of every golfing facility in Great Britain, revealing some startling truths about the current landscape of the industry. Alasdair Rae, part of the Custodian Golf team is a former Professor of Urban Studies and Planning, his research paints a clear picture of the challenges many clubs are facing today. Through comprehensive data sourced from Ordnance Survey and club statistics, we’ve uncovered a troubling trend: many golf clubs are in a precarious position. Our analysis included geodemographic profiles for a sample of six typical clubs in England and one in Scotland, representing a combined membership of 5,000. We also examined data from over 100 clubs that have closed in recent years, shedding light on the realities many are currently confronting. However, it’s not all doom and gloom. At Custodian Golf, we believe there are opportunities for clubs to secure their futures. Our mission is to partner with clubs, guiding them to understand their circumstances and plan strategically for success. Clyde Martin was a notable figure in the history of golf, particularly during a time when racial segregation was prevalent. In 1939, Clyde Martin achieved a groundbreaking milestone by being named the head professional at the segregated Langston Golf Course in Washington, D.C. At that time, Langston Golf Course served as a designated facility for African-American golfers due to the segregation policies of the era. Despite the challenges of racial segregation, Clyde Martin excelled in his role as head professional, showcasing his skills and expertise in the sport. His appointment at Langston Golf Course was a significant achievement, as it provided opportunities for African-American golfers to access quality instruction and facilities. Troon and its affiliates currently manages the Langston Golf Course, a National Links Trust facility. Established as a designated facility for African-American golfers, Langston became a symbol of progress and equality in the world of golf. It provided a platform for individuals to come together, share their passion for the sport, and contribute to the rich tapestry of the golfing community in the nation's capital. Langston Golf Course's commitment to openness and inclusivity made it a unique and vital institution. It not only offered a place for golf enthusiasts to hone their skills but also became a hub for community engagement and camaraderie. The course's history reflects a resilience against racial barriers, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among its diverse patrons.
