Look who stopped by during an invasive species survey in Fort Fitzgerald, AB! This curious pine marten gave our team a little wildlife surprise. Big thanks to Katharine Scotton (she/her) for capturing the moment! 🐾🌲 #wildlifewednesday #nerdybynature #pglenvironmental #environmentalconsulting

We are very excited to announce that Becky Kostka has joined PGL’s Alberta Office! Becky is of Rani, Norse, Celtic, and Reindeer Herding ancestry and currently lives in Treaty 7, southern Alberta. For the last eight years, she lived in Tthebacha Náre, Denendeh (Fort Smith, NWT) Treaty 8 and worked with the Tthebatthı Dënésułıné (Smith’s Landing First Nation / SLFN) as their Lands & Resources Manager as well as the Director of the Slave River Coalition. During her time with SLFN, Becky assisted the Nation in building programs to protect and assert Treaty and Aboriginal rights and restore and resurge Dëné Ch'anıe (sacred concept defining Dënésułıné worldview). At PGL, Becky will support the Environmental Planning Group to build stronger relationships with First Nation, Inuit, and Metis clients. She will assist clients in opening and holding space to restore and/or enhance governance; build trauma-informed resiliency/leadership; facilitate community-led programs with meaningful legacy outcomes; and work with communities to undertake culturally appropriate and respectful research and assessments where desired. Welcome to PGL, Becky! #nerdybynature #pglenvironmental #environmentalconsulting

PGL’ers Sarah Greene, Sarah Barr, B. Tech., PAg., Keven Goodearle, and Cory Cavazzi attended this year’s KC Classic Golf Tournament, with Sarah Greene taking home the prize for closest to the pin! See you next year! #nerdybynature #PGLEnvironmental #environmentalconsulting #golf #tournament #

We just finished an incredible field program on a remote, uninhabited island off the central coast of BC. Remediation by hand excavation, soil, and plant tissue sampling — this project had a full scope in a beautiful setting. Call us nerdy, but we are grateful for the opportunity to work in such awe-inspiring locations. #NerdyByNature #Fieldwork #CoastalAdventures #EnvironmentalScience #PGLEnvironmental #EnvironmentalConsulting #remediation #soilsampling

While conducting an Environmental Site Assessment just outside of Nelson BC, PGLer Sarah Barr, B. Tech., PAg. came across an intact glass Edison Battery Oil bottle. This object is around 100 years old! Edison Battery oil bottles were used to prevent electrolytes in batteries from evaporating. They are sought after by collectors of vintage items and offer a fascinating piece of history that represents the innovation of one of the most prolific inventors of the 20th century, Thomas Edison. Have you ever found something surprising in an unexpected place? Share your stories and thoughts with us! #showandtellfieldfinds #pglenvironmental #environmentalconsulting #batteriesintheforest #nerdybynature

It’s here! The revised version of Protocol 19 went LIVE yesterday, August 12, 2024. The changes should greatly improve the application of Protocol 19 and help to reduce soil characterization costs (land owners and developers, rejoice!). The first version of Protocol 19 went into effect on March 1, 2023 and included rigorous sampling requirements to characterize soils for relocation from a CSR Schedule 2 use site. In this updated version, sampling requirements are less prescriptive and allow for more flexibility and use of professional judgement (consultants, rejoice!). Also, four types of sites are now exempt from applying Protocol 19 sampling (assuming a few conditions are met) including: 1. Sites with a Final Determination or Numerical Certificate of Compliance 2. Authorized soil treatment facilities 3. Quarries with Schedule 2 use(s) 4. Transitory sites with Schedule 2 use(s) If your project falls under an exemption, only a soil relocation notification is required. If you want to learn more about BC’s Protocol 19 and soil relocation regulations and how they might affect your project, don’t hesitate to reach out to PGL at info@pggroup.com or 604-682-3707. We look forward to hearing from you and helping you with your soil management needs! #nerdybynature #soilrelocation #soilcharacterization #contaminatedsites #environmentalconsulting #protocol19 #contaminatedsitesregulation
