"How can governments foster a climate of #innovation 💡 in sustainable aviation?" Our panelists and participants at this year’s #BerlinAviationSummit2024 identified 4 key aspects: 1️⃣ Governments must increase their support for #research and #development of new technologies – it is crucial for advancing sustainable aviation. 2️⃣ Governments are called upon to create a regulatory framework that incentivizes the early use and production of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (#SAF) without excessive bureaucracy. 3️⃣ Governments need to focus on building #infrastructure for SAF and hydrogen to support sustainable aviation. 4️⃣ Last but not least, governments should provide necessary #funds to build factories and facilitate the production of SAF. Inmarsat WHY THE FUTURE OF AVIATION STARTS WITH CONNECTIVITY DIGITAL NOW: Presented in partnership between Inmarsat and Cranfield University Executive Summary Presented in partnership between Inmarsat and Cranfield University The pandemic’s impact has been felt across all parts of society – not least in the global aviation sector. In addition, the increased awareness of the impact of climate change caused by human behaviour, including transport, has helped create a “perfect storm” that is causing the sector’s key industry stakeholders, its customers, and governments across the globe to fundamentally reconsider their priorities and the sector’s future service offering. What is clear, as never before, is that while there is consensus for change, the pace and direction still remains uncertain. This paper by Cranfield University, sponsored by Inmarsat, has considered how the role of Digital Connectivity, in all its forms, can enable and accelerate the rapidly changing needs of air travellers and of the aviation sector itself. It has identified specific challenges and opportunities that, if addressed, will have a direct effect on the sector’s resilience, its contribution to reducing climate change, and to new customer service offerings that will enhance passengers’ willingness to travel in the post-pandemic world. The outcome of the paper is a Digital Connectivity Timeline, outlining adoption timelines for the technologies that will – in time – define the future of Aviation.

Calls for increased continuity, higher TRL targets, and collaborative industrialization funding resonate among interviewees, promising advancements in research initiatives. 🧩 Streamlining administrative processes is critical. Standardized eligibility criteria, harmonized evaluation processes, and aligned proposal deadlines are urged for greater efficiency and transparency. 🧩 Cross-collaboration is essential for achieving synergies. Expansion of networks, replication of successful methodologies, and broader partnerships, as seen in initiatives like Clean Aviation, hold the potential for driving innovation. 🧩 Recognition of the importance of investing in new infrastructure, especially in emerging technologies like hydrogen propulsion systems, underscores the need for collaboration and funding, reflecting evolving trends in technological advancement and innovation. 🇪🇺 Together we are stronger, and the EU's Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking innovation programme is proof! The Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking unites academia, research and business in the common goal of innovating aerospace decarbonisation technologies and maturing them in time for aviation to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Last Tuesday, at the 2024 Clean Aviation Forum, I participated in a panel about the EU Green Deal and route-to-market towards carbon neutral aviation. Aviation has a key role to play in supporting the European Green Deal, and the expected benefit of new technologies is to deliver net greenhouse gas reductions of no less than 30%, compared to today's aircraft models. During the panel, we discussed how funding provided by Clean Aviation, in addition to other EU and national funding frameworks, have been key to our industry's development of demonstrators that are being used to evaluate, mature and validate new decarbonisation technology. Innovation is critical to ensuring that Europe remains a world leader in aerospace. It was a pleasure to host a visit to the Aviation Services Research Centre (ASRC) yesterday from the Director of Operations, Head of Engineering, and Head of Digitalisazion & Innovation of Lufthansa Technik Shenzhen Co., Ltd. It enabled the team to showcase the outcome of some of their past projects, as well as to further discuss potential collaborative research opportunities relating to greater introduction of innovation & technology into Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) operations to help address the day-to-day pain points and problem statements raised by individual entities, as well as to try to support the organizations technology roadmap, as part of their business development ambitions and sustainability needs. The ASRC’s mission has always been to provide world class commercial aircraft MRO & Manufacturing solutions across the region, by combining industrial knowledge and academic research excellence to develop innovative and impactful technologies for sustainable aviation industry growth.
