In honor of Men’s Health month, we recognize the culturally sensitive health services our grantee partner African Family Health Organization provides to African and Caribbean immigrants and refugees. “Men do care about their health – but often they face other competing priorities including securing employment, housing, and food. At AFAHO, our health work is centered on preventive health. With the support of our Male Cultural Health Navigator and key male leaders in the community, we engage our African and Caribbean men on the importance of screenings and prevention – know your status, know your numbers – before it’s too late. “ – Dianne Uwayo, MPH, AFAHO Health & Social Programs Manager AFAHO’s health programs aim to: – Improve knowledge and awareness about various health issues affecting African and Caribbean immigrants and refugees. – Help change attitudes and behaviors around health. – Assist clients in gaining access to primary health care services. On this #WorldRefugeeDay, it's crucial to acknowledge that the number of refugees worldwide is at an all-time high. PROPEL Adapt ensures that family planning and reproductive health services are accessible to all, especially those displaced from their homes. Access to FP/RH is vital for refugees as it promotes health, empowerment, and stability during challenging times. Our work spans the humanitarian-development-peace nexus, supporting health services for vulnerable people impacted by disasters, displacement, and other crises. The fragility of these settings, exacerbated by socio-economic challenges, political instability, and environmental factors, increases vulnerability to adverse health outcomes. By coordinating with local actors and using a multi-sectoral approach, PROPEL Adapt improves preparedness and facilitates transitions from crisis to long-term recovery. We strengthen primary health care with the goal of universal health coverage, enhancing policy, advocacy, financing, and governance to build resilient health systems that maintain continuity of services, information, and supplies. #RefugeeRights #FamilyPlanning #ReproductiveHealth

In a new op-ed from Last Mile Health & Co-Impact, Marion Subah & Yasmin Madan write, "Universal health coverage demands that health systems are just and inclusive – yet this shouldn’t just apply to the patients we serve. We need just and inclusive work for women in the health workforce." Read more about lessons learned from Liberia's national community health worker program via FairPlanet: https://bit.ly/3OBLxcO

#WorldNGODay World NGO Day on February 27th celebrates the important work of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) worldwide. NGOs fill gaps where government resources are lacking, providing essential services and advocacy for underserved populations. NGOs empower individuals and communities and advocate for systemic change. In times of crisis, they are among the first responders, offering emergency aid. NGOs play a crucial role in advancing healthcare and social justice, creating a healthier, more inclusive world. AFEW International is a Dutch non-governmental humanitarian public health organization dedicated to serving Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) since 2001. Our focus has always been on supporting civil society actors and networks representing communities that are excluded, criminalised, more stigmatised, and face multiple barriers preventing them from having equal access to basic services and being able to fully participate and advocate in civic life. Today and always, we extend our gratitude to all NGOs for their joint effort in bringing safety, relief, and sustainable solutions to vulnerable populations in EECA. Together we are stronger! Southern Province has successfully conducted a dissemination Workshop of the Community Health Policy Documents with support from UNICEF. The dissemination Workshop was long overdue as the Ministry of Health launched these documents in April 2023. The Policy Documents will help to ensure alignment and proper coordination of players working in the community health space thereby address problems of fragmentation. The Policy Documents include.. 1. National Community Health Strategic and Operational Plan 2022 - 2026 2. CBV incentive guidelines 3. Community Health Service Package 4. Community Health Scorecard Guidelines for Social Accountability 5. CBV contracts and Guidelines 6. CBV Training Package and Facilitator's Manual If you are working in the community health space, find time to read. September marks the start of our 2024 Health for Life Challenge! Friendship Bridge serves nearly 35,000 women annually whose access to preventive healthcare is rarely an option. This lack of healthcare only perpetuates the cycle of poverty. To further our mission of creating opportunities that empower Guatemalan women to build a better life, our Health for Life program provides health education and preventive services. We provide culturally-sensitive services through mobile clinics and in-home appointments, led by female medical professionals who travel to the villages where our clients live. Each clinic is staffed with highly-trained professionals fluent in the indigenous languages our clients speak. Last year, we provided health services to nearly 7,000 clients, but we need your help to reach even more as we expand services to Nebaj, in the Guatemalan department of Quiché. Will you support us during the month of September? https://loom.ly/aeL380U #HealthForLife #FriendshipBridge #EmpowerWomen #EliminatePoverty #preventivehealthcare #creatingopportunity #healtheducation

Consultant - Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights/Family Planning/Gender and social inclusion; Participatory, innovative, applied learning and sustainable impact; Francophone West Africa; Humanitarian settings
I'm delighted to share an advocacy document I helped Care put together for Governments and donors with regard to Community Health Workers. We looked at government-supported CHW programs in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Nigeria and the United States using the CHW Assessment and Improvement Matrix (AIM) and found that insufficient funding of these programs affects remuneration and other incentives for CHWs but also leads to inadequate resources for training, data collection, and equipment and supplies. Spoiler: It's a gender issue ! 70% of CHWs are women who are often unpaid or underpaid, face limited career growth opportunities, are underrepresented in health leadership positions, and are not sufficiently integrated into formal health systems. Recommendations include investing in CHWs beyond simple health service delivery. In addition to technical skill building and training, female CHWs should be supported holistically to develop leadership and advocacy skills, strong support networks and broader areas of expertise such as financial literacy and entrepreneurship. This not only results in stronger, more resilient, and sustainable CHW programs but will also empower these individuals beyond their roles as CHWs to improve their own lives and those of their families and communities. https://lnkd.in/eUrMWt62 #communityhealthworkers #CHWs #healthsystemsstrengthening #humanresourcesforhealth

Here's an excellent example of the power of budget work.
🔔The Family Caregiving Programme is launching a new report: Older Persons, Care Needs and Social Grants in South Africa. The report explores how the grant gets transformed into meeting the needs of older persons. Building on our earlier work on Funding Elder Care, this report draws on national statistics and new qualitative findings with 80 families in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal to consider the care practices, care needs and the reach of the Older Person Grant. The findings highlight both the contributions the grants make to support older persons and their households, but we also draw attention to how it falls short and what gets sacrificed when cutting back is essential. The media brief and infographics are available in isiXhosa, Afrikaans and isiZulu, DM us for access! Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/dvfFTBsi #olderpersons #familycaregivingprogram #southafrica #OPG #socialgrants #care
