What needs to happen to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission trucks? According to Volvo, public charging networks will be key to scale and rapid adoption. We need thousands of charging points for heavy-duty trucks all around the globe. We believe that it’s [moving] too slow. We also see that efficient incentive schemes can play an important role. Looking at the markets that are ahead [in this regard], like the U.S., in Norway, Sweden, Germany, it really helps to accelerate the market. We are starting to see the appearance of heavy EV's in NZ, so the same will apply here. #electricvehicles #trucks #freight

Nearly 25% of Europe's carbon emissions come from transport, with a big chunk from heavy-duty haulage vehicles. Swedish company Scania Group introduces a solution: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝’𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫-𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐤, aiming to cut this down. Their design integrates solar panels across the truck’s trailer. The electricity produced by the panels will be used to charge hybrid trucks and even for "dynamic charging" while driving during the day. The solar trailers, developed with Uppsala University, can store around 200 kilowatt hours of energy, about three times what the tractor part holds. It means even old diesel beasts could benefit, potentially reducing fuel consumption by up to 40%. It looks like a zero-emission future is well on its way. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) data for 2023, electric and hydrogen truck registrations are up more than threefold. Commenting on the figures, James Venables, our Head of Future Sustainability, said “2023 was a year for customers to really get their teeth into electric trucks, and we saw growth across all weight classes and in different categories too. Instead of revolutionizing what’s underneath a semi-truck’s hood, however, Sweden’s Scania aims to take advantage of all the free real estate surrounding the tons of cargo in transit on roadways. Per a release from Scania, the company recently partnered with Uppsala University and the energy company Midsummer to develop a 560-horsepower plug-in hybrid semi-truck prototype whose 60-foot-long trailer is wrapped in 100 square meters of solar panels. According to CleanTechnica, the additional solar powered boost could supply the truck with an additional annual driving range of up to 5,000 kilometers in Sweden—a promising figure, given the prototype’s location.
