Some good news for those who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, or joining our health service in the future! We are delivering a major expansion of healthcare college places in Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy. This will contribute to delivering up to 40% in college places in these vital disciplines over the next 2 years. ➡ c.20% increase in Physiotherapy college college places ➡ c.40% increase in Occupational Therapy college places ➡ c.28% increase in Speech & Language college places We have already announced a significant expansion in medical and nursing college places. Those increases are already being delivered, with significant increases delivered last year and more to come this year. I know we need to do even more to meet our healthcare demand into the future! The GMC released an update yesterday! Demonstrating their focus on creating fair and compassionate workplaces Addressing issues like bullying and discrimination. This update highlights; Five key areas: promoting positive workplace cultures, patient-centered care, addressing discrimination, advocating for inclusive leadership, and ensuring safe delegation. Doctors are now explicitly prohibited from behaviors that may offend or distress colleagues or patients, with guidelines on how to respond to instances of bullying, harassment, or discrimination. The GMC is organizing events and workshops across the UK to raise awareness among doctors, educators, and students about the new guidance. New Project Report in RRH: The Rural Hand Therapy Project – providing hand therapy services closer to home by Sue Williams, Lin Wegener and Gail Kingston. https://lnkd.in/dgMvEPkR Rural patients with a hand injury often receive initial hand surgery and rehabilitation in metropolitan or larger regional centres. Access to follow-up treatment for rural patients after the initial phase of care can be affected by transport options, distance, staff shortages and availability of hand therapists (0occupational therapists or physiotherapists who have specialised skills in optimising functional use of the hand and arm after injury). After experiencing an increase in volume and complexity of hand therapy referrals, Toowoomba Hospital, a regional hospital in the Darling Downs Health Service (DDHS) in rural Queensland, Australia, found their existing model of care did not meet the needs of rural patients or therapists, risking poorer clinical outcomes. If you read one thing this month make it this report: An exploration of the experiences of ethnic minority practitioners and International Medical Graduates of the management of concerns about their medical practice carried out by Opinion Research Services - 💡fascinating reading, the only thing I would change would be to broaden the sample size. This research casts a lens over the lived experience of #ethnicminority and International Medical Graduate (IMG) practitioners who are subject to a formal performance/ managing concerns process. The report raises a number of concerns and themes as to the management of individuals and we can echo some of this having worked with a number of #NHS clients across the country and witnessing first hand how this manifests in case management. Well done to everyone involved in this work and hopefully it will be welcomed by #NHS employers. “Most participants described a culture of bullying, discrimination and blame within the NHS, and an unwillingness to address it. They also felt that the NHS is reluctant to listen to practitioners’ concerns, often demonising and ostracising them. Examples were provided about concerns about patient safety not being listened to, experiences of racial discrimination being disregarded and extenuating circumstances not being taken into account. This article should be about “3 Ways Residency Programs Can Treat Medical Residents Like Normal Humans” Instead, the AMA writes an article encouraging residents to hire people to do their laundry, clean their house and cook their meals because the toxic culture of medicine forces medical residents to work 80+ hours a week for little pay while sacrificing their wellbeing for the sake of training. AMA should be striving for ways to prevent exploitation of medical residents. Instead, they choose to write something that perpetuates a toxic cycle of burnout and a broken medical system. Just completed a 3-day work experience programme at Kettering General Hospital, where I had the opportunity to shadow and meet different healthcare professionals. From therapists to doctors, radiographers to pharmacists, I was able to witness different job roles but with the same approach to work ethics. It was fascinating to see how the pharmacy section operates with everyone doing different tasks, but working together towards the same goal of distributing the correct medicine to patients. Communication and teamwork were key in achieving this. I learned that regardless of job title, showing compassion, respect, and being reliable at work are essential qualities in healthcare. #healthcare #teamwork #workexperience

Physical therapists have achieved a notable ranking, securing the ninth position among the best professions in the healthcare sector according to a recent analysis conducted by Tebra. This recognition highlights the significant contributions physical therapists make in enhancing patient care, mobility, and overall well-being. As experts in movement and functional rehabilitation, physical therapists play a pivotal role in the recovery process of patients, employing tailored therapeutic exercises and interventions to improve quality of life. Tebra, a leading digital healthcare platform formed from the merger of Kareo and PatientPop, undertook this comprehensive analysis. Utilizing data from the 2022 Bureau of Labor Statistics and census information on U.S. healthcare occupations, Tebra assessed and ranked 46 healthcare jobs. The evaluation criteria included median pay, the job outlook over a decade, employment density per 10,000 workers, and search volume per capita. This methodological approach provided a robust framework to identify and celebrate the most sought-after and impactful roles within the healthcare industry.

Their briefing on the vulnerable position of general practice is key. https://lnkd.in/e7iyryFd High quality primary care - with a diverse team - capable of addressing both the medical AND the non- medical (wider determinants of health) as per Sir Michael Marmot, are key. Amid the narrative of 'we need more GPs" we must not forget the nuance of how that team operates and the skills they have. We have made huge progress in bringing in wider skills often better placed to address wider determinants (even than GPs). Having medical supervision is important, working as a team is important, but also valuing the non-medical aspects of care in its own right, with supervision and support to also protect and grow this aspect. Personalised Care - the 3 new roles of health coach, social prescribing link worker and care co-ordinator, need nurturing and growing......career structure, ongoing training and support to cement their place in primary care teams.....not just be used as cheap admin, or substitute receptionists. Continuty for the right people is key, but we need to hold that across health and social issues. GPs often don't want to do this, certainly not on their own. Let's keep the focus on primary care teams , with a wide range of skills, working collaboratively. We probably do need more GPs to steward this approach (certainly better to expand GPs then hospital consultants), but they need to be part of diverse inclusive teams, with leadership drawn from across the skill sets.
