Please join us in welcoming Trevin Sorby as the new Site Manager for Fort Bliss, TX. Trevin originally hails from Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he spent his adolescence. His father was a Police Officer in Northern Virginia and a United States Marine Corps veteran, and his mother was an Accountant for a large non-profit organization. There was always an emphasis on serving his country and community, so in 2013, he joined the United States Army and proudly served for the next nine years. While in the military, he was stationed in various places such as El Paso, Texas; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 2022, he earned the rank of Sergeant First Class and was medically retired a few months later. When his service in the Army was over, he and his family moved to Orlando, Florida, but after six months, he decided to move to his wife's native city of El Paso to pursue a better childhood for their children. Trevin still aspired to continue serving his country and community and accepted a job as a contractor for the Customs and Border Patrol, where he served as a supervisor for the security department in one of their camps housing asylum-seeking migrants. Trevin holds an Associate's Degree in Management and expects to complete his Bachelor's in 2024. He aspires to pursue his Master's Degree in Project Management next year and continue to grow and develop his knowledge and education. He has a wife, Amber, a native of El Paso, and two daughters, Adeline and Audrina. Welcome to Phoenix, Trevin!

Churches and Airplanes. Church security teams are usually a result of volunteering parishioners. Like a commercial airplane, all the flight attendants know and can fill each others roles; the same applies to church security. Members should be not only be versed in the locations of AED’s, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers, but how to use them. Designate a floor warden to direct the team. Most houses of worship, regardless of religion, have current or former military, law enforcement, nurses, or other first responders in their pews. Use them. Delegate. Vet your team so as to determine your best de-escalator. Flight attendants are among the best at de-escalation. Why? Because they have to deal with that boo-sheet right there in that seat. It’s not like they can ask them to step outside. As much as we’d like them to.

Leesa Henderson, PT, DPT nailed it. This is why at The Operation Child Care Project we say, don't call me resilient. Military spouses don't want to be applauded; we don't want companies to go out of their way to take photos of us for their websites and social media. We don't want another free coffee. We want honesty. We want transparency. We want the gaslighting to stop. Will applying for unemployment benefits due to a PCS in my state (that bragged about allowing this for military families) take me over 40 hours to complete and be denied so many times that I give up? Awesome, just tell me that so I can plan. Is the waitlist for on base care so long that I won't stand a chance at access until my child is 2 years older? Great, just say that so I can save my energy. Is the new X, Y, Z program so convoluted and lacking accountability for anyone involved in its processing that I will wonder if it is indeed me who is the problem? I got it. Write that out clearly so I can move on. During the pandemic there was this meme that went around when daycare shut down and people (predominately mothers) had to work from home with infants and toddlers. It was a burnt out super woman asking for help but everyone kept yelling above her voice, "You are amazing! You are a superhero". She didn't want to be a superhero. She wanted help. Military spouses aren't out here passively surviving; they are intentionally pushing against barriers from every angle. The least we could do is be transparent about programming, resources, and lifestyle. Thank you Leesa for your honesty and sharing your story.

A little over a week ago, I was applauded for my role as a military spouse. My resilience. My strength. But as I fight to balance work with a million tedious moving tasks because I don’t have PCS leave so I am working early and late to compensate and will do so as they pack my house and on the days we drive to our new duty station, I yearn for support. As I spend my little free time pre-packing my family’s treasured items I know are likely to get broken or lost in mountains of packing paper or shoved in a strange box carelessly without my intervention because moving contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder no matter their rating, I yearn for softness. As I struggle to find and fund suitable childcare for my 3 year old because the base centers are full with impossible waitlists and the programs to help offset off-base costs require numerous steps on multiple sites and each branch has different requirements, I yearn for ease. As a military community we recognize there is sacrifice with service. But with all of the programs and legislation and talk of taking care of our troops, why does it still have to be this hard? You are just a number. Is what members of the armed forces are told. It means that you are: ✅ Disposable ✅ Discarded once the government have done with you ✅ No longer of use to the country This can happen to serving personnel and veterans. Where does this leave spouses who are bereaved when the husband or wife dies in service? They are left in a grey zone of (generally)not having served. Except military families do serve it is in a different capacity. What can this mean for the families? ✅ Identity issues ✅ Purple Pack for moving on ✅ 3 -24 months to vacate a MOD property ✅ Extracted as efficiently as possible We are talking with Jilly Carrell her husband Nick died while in service. A military lifestyle offers spouses numerous volunteer opportunities. According to the 2023 Military Family Lifestyle Survey conducted by Blue Star Families, 66% of military spouses who participated in the survey had volunteered in the past year. However, a significant portion, 45%, did not perceive their volunteer experience as relevant to their job search. To address this disconnect, Blue Star Families introduced the Blue Star Spouse Employment Toolkit. This toolkit aims to encourage spouses to make the most of military-related volunteer opportunities.
