We asked Visible Geology Student Challenge judge Melissa Pereira for some model inspiration! When asked what model she would submit to the challenge, she said, "Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta! Visible Geology makes showing off all the intricate rock layers so easy. Plus, re-creating the topography was fun using the custom topography tool!" With just over three weeks left of the challenge, it’s time to submit your models: https://lnkd.in/gkaZsima #VisibleGeology #Earthscienceeducation #STEM #geologicalmodelling #VisibleGeologyStudentChallenge

Basin geometry plays a leading role on deposition and transport of sediments. Understanding the paleogeography of sedimentary basins requires an integrative approach utilizing the sedimentology, stratigraphy and tectonics sedimentary basin-filling successions. Integration of these data helps to determine a range of depth for paleogeography and geometry of the Basin. For absolute estimation of paleogeography maps, we can use the FSM method. This method uses geology and geophysics data to mimic sedimentary processes involved in Basin sediment filling. The following, geometry evolution of a 3D FSM is illustrated. In this case, Basin geometry is a gentle ramp in the beginning of the modeling then gradually changes to the intrashelf basin.

Tick the right answer Nickel–Strunz classification or strunz classification, Dana classification, IMA symbol, space group, unit cell all these terms are associated with mineral/gems and are introduced by mineralogists of IMA or crystallographers of IUCr. These words are never used or seen written on any Gem Identification Report issued anywhere in the world because a- Because these words have no significance in Gemology b- Numerical values of the above named terms written separately for every separate species of gem are of no use. c- Because Gemology is far superior than such data and do no help in identifying any gem species. d- Such data are confidential discoveries and gemologist are not allowed to enter into a confidential field

There were once around 4,000 building stone quarries in Scotland – so how can you tell where one piece came from? And is it possible to figure out whether one small fragment was once part of a larger, very famous whole – like the Stone of Destiny, perhaps? Enter our intrepid science team! Stone matching is a skill that we use all the time at HES to help preserve and maintain different types of stone buildings across the country. We start by getting a physical sample which is taken to our science lab at the Engine Shed for analysis. Techniques the team use include X-ray fluorescence analysis (also used in authenticating fine art!), scanning electron microscopy, colour analysis and more. This means we were in a perfect position to help when the Commissioners for the Safeguarding of the Regalia asked us to determine whether an unassuming chunk of sandstone was the real deal. Spoilers – the answer was yes. #HeritageScience #STEM #Science #ScottishHistory #geology #Digital #HeritageMatters #StoneOfDestiny

🌊 Rocking the Baltic: Study of the Estonian Bedrock Relief 🪨 The Estonian Geological Survey and University of Tartu have been investigating the bedrock depression beneath the Väinameri, the shallow sea of the West Estonian Archipelago. Their goal? To unlock the geological history hidden within the seabed below. 🧭 Equipped with our SIG Pulse S1 boomer and SIG 16.6.5 streamer (1-channel, 6 hydrophones) paired with Meridata’s MDCS data acquisition software, the team achieved penetration depths of over 60 meters below the sea floor! 🌍 This study revealed two key Quaternary layers: the glacial till and the unique sequences of the Baltic Sea (Baltic Ice Lake, Yoldia Sea, Lake Ancylus, and Litorina Sea)—offering a window into the region’s fascinating geological evolution. 🪶 Proud to support this exploration, bringing the stories of the Baltic seabed to the surface! 💡 #GeologicalSurvey #MarineGeology #BalticSea #SIGPulseS1 #SeismicExploration #EstonianGeology #SeismicTechnology #MarineResearch

Conducting a comprehensive review of stratigraphy requires tremendous effort, so I’m pleased to finally share that our study, focused on the Miocene to Quaternary fill of the Danube Basin in Central Europe, has been published in the Geological Society of London Special Publication! 📝🏁🎉🥳 https://lnkd.in/exhKMvUj Our work presents several key advancements, including: (1) a revision of the Middle Miocene formations, with a focus on (2) the division of the #Badenian stage into lower and upper sequences, aligned with observed sequence stratigraphy; (3) updated timing of Middle Miocene transgressive-regressive changes, using the latest Ar/Ar dating of volcanic intercalations; and (4) evidence of early #Pannonian (Late Miocene) rifting and post-6 Ma basin inversion. 🌐🕵🏻♀️ This review is based on sedimentological, well-log, and reflection seismic data, and integrates existing biostratigraphic and geochronological constraints 🔬🪨⛏️📈🦴⏳. It is conceptually linked to another chapter we developed on the Vienna Basin, which shares several similarities in its basin fill: https://lnkd.in/ezVgmXK4 This volume, edited by Gabor Tari, Alexander Kitchka, Csaba Krézsek, Dubravko Lučić, Miloš Markič, Dejan Radivojevicć, Reinhard Sachsenhofer, and myself, showcases the most recent research on the entire Pannonian Super Basin 📜🪄📖✨: https://lnkd.in/eZzkvVsh #DanubeBasin #ViennaBasin #PannonianBasin #geology #stratigraphy #CentralEurope

Cross beds in upper kaimur Sandstone of Vindhyan supergroup rock Cross beds, also known as cross-bedding, are a type of sedimentary structure that forms when sediment is deposited at an angle to the main sedimentation direction. Cross beds are formed when sediment is transported by wind or water and deposited in a new location, often at an angle to the prevailing current. The angle of deposition can vary from a few degrees to over 30 degrees. Cross beds indicate paleocurrent directions, Depositional environments, agents of sediments transport, Paleogeography, Depositional processes. Cross beds are valuable tools for geologists to reconstruct past environments and understand the geological history of any region. #Geologist #Field #Sedimentrystructure #sitegeologist #Structure #bedding
