A day of firsts! Pilbara Minerals’ first Swagging On Country program was indeed a red letter day! As well as being the first time their company shared in the two-day Swagging on Country Aboriginal wisdom experience in nature, it was also the first time Nyamal custodians Sandra Bumbrew and Pauline Monaghan shared their skills and stories as part of the growing Swagging team. "I love being part of Swagging because sharing about our culture makes me feel good", said custodian Pauling Monaghan. It was so encouraging to see senior leaders including MD and CEO Dale Henderson and Non-Executive Director Nick Cernotta clearing their busy schedules to prioritise this important and informative experience where we gathered in our humanity beyond skin out On Country. Although the roo tail caught the day before was unfortunately left in sister’s freezer, it did make it to the fire two nights later when Pilbara Minerals’ second group journeyed out for their weekend Swagging adventure. Another wonderful program where conversation threads continued about the challenges and opportunities of mining to care for country and Aboriginal communities in a new and more effective way. Here’s what Group Manager Sustainability Marie-Alice Small had to say “I am so grateful to have participated in this beautiful, once-in-a-lifetime experience. In such a short space of time, we were able to connect with wonderful families, hear their stories, and gain insights into ways of life we seldom have the opportunity to learn about. Swagging on Country has deepened my understanding of cultural practices, made me appreciate the importance of stopping and truly listening to country more, and reminded me how much we can gain by embracing the knowledge systems of Aboriginal peoples. I hope that more people can be fortunate enough to have such an experience." And so it is! We look forward to welcoming other groups and #PilbaraMinerals back for two more programs this season.
