Australia faces severe #PlasticPollution and an imminent landfill challenge. Recent #research indicates that one million tonnes of Australia’s annual #PlasticConsumption is single-use, 84% of which ends up in landfill, with 130,000 tonnes leaking into the marine environment annually. Moreover, many landfills across the country are projected to run out of space within the next two to three years. Moonee Valley City Council Mayor Pierce Tyson, said Council’s contract with RECOVERED ENERGY AUSTRALIA (REL) is a significant milestone towards slashing community emissions and bidding farewell to the negative impacts associated with traditional landfills like odour, vermin and air pollution. “By entering into this contract with REL without making any capital contributions, we hope to showcase our commitment to innovative sustainability without breaking the bank,” Mayor Tyson said. Mayor Tyson said REL would not only receive landfill waste from residential red-lid and commercial blue lid bins, but also from Council’s public litter bins and that this would not replace the need for the green-lid food organic garden organic (FOGO) waste service currently being rolled out across the municipality. By pioneering this new technology, Moonee Valley will be a local government leader in the waste and recycling processing space. Gasification has successfully been used internationally for more than 20 years, with more than 30 plants currently operating globally. In Australia, the technology has met the most stringent guidelines and has all federal, state and local government approvals, including from the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA). https://lnkd.in/eEa_dzfu #localgovernment #lga #gasification #energy #wte #efw #2023EFW #WMRR #circulareconomy #Waste #waronwaste #ghgemissions

🌱 In tackling our approach to climate resilience, topsoil is one of our most precious resources! Soil erosion and topsoil loss, particularly in Australia, is having a big impact on our native vegetation and agricultural resources. Construction has a big part to play in helping reduce this loss and looking for ways to be #Naturepositive in our BMD Group projects. Partnering with Soil Recycling Co is helping reduce waste and carbon emissions by recycling topsoil on site, rather than the costly and environmentally harmful practice of transporting soil off and back to the site. 🌱 https://lnkd.in/g3gTaXmv

I was privileged to attend a dialogue organized by Consumers Federation of Kenya (COFEK) on, “Management of e-Waste and Climate Change ' on 31st May last year. During this meeting, the issue of lack of standardized color-coding scheme for the various streams of waste was raised and the representative from the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry was urged to follow up on this. As it will provide a road map and bolster source separation efforts in the country. It is good to see that NEMA has proposed a national coding scheme for waste management given as follows: 🟢Green for organic waste 🔵Blue for recyclable waste ⚫Black for general waste ⁉ You may have noted that they have not provided a color code for e-waste which is an emerging waste stream that is growing at an exponential rate as consumer appetite for electrical and electronic devices continues to rise. 📣The public has been invited to give their views on the proposed color-coding scheme on or before August 16, 2024, through email info@nema.go.ke or any of Nema's social media platforms. ✍🏾 You can provide your views including the lack of color code for e-waste. https://lnkd.in/djD-Mr3m
