On this day in history, 19 December 1941, the US Naval Academy Class of 1942 graduates ahead of schedule. Their original graduation date of February 1942 was moved up due to the United States’ entry into WWII after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The US Naval Academy had been on a wartime schedule since the summer of 1940 in response to Germany’s attack on France. It also accelerated its courses to condense their material into a 3-year program, and began allowing 5 appointees for each Congress member instead of four. All of these changes contributed to the dramatic increase in the numbers of United States Navy servicemen over the course of WWII. Image of the US Naval Academy from the 1930s. A really good long form article (with data) illustrating the tension at Service academies between the need for diverse perspectives in their officer corps and systems that often disadvantage the diverse individuals. While this tension is seen in the experiences of the socio-economically diverse and prior enlisted (both apply to me), it is most acute for racial diversity because it is an ever-visible part of a students identity. The academy prep schools like the United States Military Academy Preparatory School provide immense value by improving the access to and success of these more of these diverse populations. However, the core quantitative “meritocracy” of the academies present inherent challenges evidenced by the data in this article. The article sums up the challenges of quantifying every aspect of “merit” for officer candidates: “Owens has expressed concern that cadets are too often treated as numbers: their GPA or class rankings that determine who gets coveted assignments such as a place in flight school…But I've been talked down to more because of my class rank than because I'm a Black man." I attended this amazing session that provided some valuable (and actionable) insights. It's always good to expand knowledge and pick up new skills. Thanks to Maria Louise and Lauren Dodd for organizing! Appreciate the effort that goes into these learning opportunities. #ProfessionalDevelopment #ContinuousLearning #goarmybeatnavy
Yesterday the teaching librarians of the Naval Academy and West Point came together virtually for our first joint Instruction Day, 2024. It was a fabulous professional development collaboration and we learned a lot from each other. Thanks to my co-organizer Lauren Dodd (USMA)!! We share in a unique mission to train future military leaders and are committed to equip them with the information skills they need to excel. Thanks to all our colleagues who contributed to the day, and to those that presented Lightning Talks. And, as always, GO NAVY! ;)

I have long said sailors are mariners and warfighters first and foremost. So naturally, I find a lot to like in the below from the US Navy Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Clear, succinct and on point. Clarity of purpose and a clear-eyed vision of the threat is important. Of course, a conflict in the Indo-Pacific would be catastrophic and we must do all we can to prevent it where possible. But failing to prepare for it or acknowledge it simply undermines deterrence. If conflict is to arise in the Indo-Pacific it will be fought across all domains, military and non-military but geography dictates it will likely be very much maritime in nature. We must prepare our maritime warfighters for this potential, and we must do so now, and hope in doing so we bolster our deterrence strategy.

Director of Strategy and Strategic Communications , CORE-CSI/ Leader-Commander-Strategist -Air National Guard
This is an outstanding list of priorities. This is what the Space Force should have. Nowhere in here does the Navy say it's a support force for the other services. Nowhere in here does it say it relies on others to do it's missions. It's a warfighting service that deters and projects combat, warfighting power. The CNO has provided the example for the CSO. Let's replace the "Comprehensive Strategy for the Space Force" with a spacepower version of this!!! National Institute for Deterrence Studies Peter Garretson Peter Marquez https://lnkd.in/eUd23ax3

Today, I had the opportunity to expand my knowledge on the U.S. Naval Community College. I encourage all Naval Leaders to read these interesting facts and nominate a creditable Sailor from their command. USNCC provides naval-relevant associate degree levels and stackable certificates in naval-relevant fields to enlisted service members. It became established in 2021 in order to progress war fighting skills capability. Partnering with regionally accredited universities, its goal is to remain responsive to the fleet through emerging Navy programs and needs such as leadership, engineering, data analytics, cybersecurity, aviation and many more. It does not limit service members to in rate only specific classes. It does not touch TA or GI Bill funding. It does not require a specific time in service. It’s 100% funded. To enroll: -command nomination or apply online -application screened -command approves -candidate notified of admissions and next steps
